NIC JOHNSON - Omaha, Nebraska is the home of the Huskers. But, what do I care about football. I am writing this bio so, I will intend to put things of my interest here for you to read.
The Arrival:
I moved to Omaha in 1997 to get around people. That simple. More people = more musical possibilities. I have been involved with music since childhood. It's just always been my love. In the late 1990's I began playing around Omaha with local Rock & Roll groups. Including jam sessions at Club Genesis and The Saddle Creek Bar both blues clubs located in North Omaha.
Loosing My Virginity:
"Spiral Locomotive" was a group that I formed with two wonderful friends, Nathaniel Brighton & Timmy Cich in 2000. We were a very jam oriented original group. Yes, there was long hair, red suites, leather pants, feather boas, glitter, and nudity involved. Our biggest claim to fame was being featured on a Charity CD with Eric Johnson, 7 Mary Three, & Peter Frampton.
Unsolved Mysteries:
Around this time I was also running an open mic session on Thursday nights at a coffee shop called, The Latte Lounge. This was the place that faces like Brad Hoshaw, Justin Lamoureux, Sarah Benck, Matt Whipkey, Kyle Harvey, Reagan Roeder, and myself all became very close. I've never experienced anything like this time in my life before or after. Not that life doesn't offer similar beauties. You can find those when you just look with your mind.
(The lull in the story):
In 2002 things changed. I moved to small town USA to get my feet on the ground. I helped raise a little kid and spent a lot of time with my family. I made music with a digital track recorder, and played my guitars every day. I feel that it is important to note that during this time of my life I learned a lot about patience, understanding, acceptance, and just the way that people really really differ. 2 years later I was in a station wagon with old friend Justin Lamoureux on our way to California.
My Amazing Friend Red:
We spent an entire month together seeing the west part of the country sleeping on beaches, visiting family and friends, swimming in the ocean, talking to men in dresses and apparent retired doctors about Jim Croce. Once again, I realized that my life has direction of shared adventure and beauty. When we arrived back in Omaha, I had a place to sleep and found a job almost immediately.
The Return:
Living back in Omaha felt more like home to me than where I grew up at. So, this was such a wonderful thing for me. I started another 3 man band with friends Nathaniel Brighton and Tyler Cook, called Vinnie Bronx. This was more of an experimental songy ... jazz "influenced" group. The shows with Vinnie Bronx were very fun. Benson, Nebraska is the place to be. It's like a strip in music town. We were excited to be playing a lot during the Benson rise.
The Idea:
The idea came about playing with each other. Like ... really. Everybody just playing together. Bands with other bands. Not opening or headlining or even looking at it like that. But, being a part of everybody's band. Well how in the hell would you do that. And why. Because by doing this, you could open doors for everyone, build something wonderful, share what works and not worry about what doesn't. This is when and where Sarah Benck starts playing bass with Matt Whipkey. This is when and where Matt Whipkey starts playing guitar with Brad Hoshaw. This is when and where I start playing with Justin Lamoureux & Midwest Dilemma. This is when and where Adam Hawkins stars forming It's True! Ect. Ect. you get the picture I would hope.
Midwest Dilemma:
With in Midwest Dilemma we put 23 people together for an album like Omaha has never quite seen. "Timelines & Tragedies" was the title. The record wins the album of the year at the OEA Awards. We tour to New York City and back. We fly to Boise, Idaho. We play NXNE in Canada. Along, while writing material for the next album and playing regionally as well. Charting at 112 on the CMJ Charts keeps the excitement rolling ant Red rolls back to the west coast to deliver the album personally to the people. Midwest Dilemma is by far the most satisfying, exciting, fun, stressful, hard working, emotional, unexplainable, and beautiful musical group that I've ever been a part of. you can check more out by direct linking to the sites listed on this page.
