back from the grave, pebbles, nuggets etc. suicide, velvets, oblivians, modern lovers, gories, birthday party and all things cave, tom waits, gun club, songs the cramps taught us, stooges, sonics, stones, jonny thunders, mary chain, sonic youth, the cure, violent femmes..
Vinny & The Curse played it's first show in April 2009 after a handful of rehearsals. So it'still early days. Scott/Vinny (guitar/singing) & Rich/The Curse (drums/singing), friends of many years shared the bill numerous times in previous bands - The Big Bang and The Mobsters respectively. The spark for V & the C came via a chance encounter becoming a conversation about the Mary Chain.
Next came a mixtape featuring Suicide's 'Speed Queen', The Groupies 'Primitive' & The Moontrekkers 'Night of the Vampire'. The aim was to keep it simple, hence the use of only 2 drums, and one guitar, albeit through a stack of homemade/mistreated amps. The line up is not a gimmick, an attempt to 'slot into' a genre. Neither do we dislike or disrespect the standard band setup, it's just what works for us sonically and socially.
We played a Lux Interior tribute Cramps night and played alongside The Gories and the Oblivians at Blast Off festival. We've just recorded a 7" split single with our amigos Black Mekon, limited to 300 copies. On sale at shows or from the back of our van!
Here are some endorsements we've recieved in our short existence..
...VINNY & THE CURSE at the Salford Arms are a two minute hit machine, who pump out gothic rock and roll, wrapped up in an up-tempo post JAMC gusto. The guitarist has a swagger and beefs up the tunes convincingly whilst his cohort just stands at two drums bashing out the beats, yet it all has the benefits of trash pop and leather jacketed rock and roll boiled up with the excitement of a post punk attack. 24 minutes later it’s over and I’m impressed... ...Next up, Vinny and the Curse. I’m not sure what kind of curse. Only time will tell. Maybe I’ll grow giant man boobs and start speaking in tongues…whoops too late, nature's already got there Vinny (actually I have a chest of steel, this is all for comedic purposes). I rather liked their take on 60's garage with a shaving of rockabilly. One guy on geetar and a microphone made from an old telephone, another on a bloody big drum and cymbal type set up, they played a Coldrice-tastic show (Frankenstein in particular hit the spot) that set what’s left of my loins on fire. I’ve not been to a Coldrice do for ages, but was a sort of regular at their legendary Bar Academy nights back in the day. Lady B informed me that one of the blokes from V and the C was / is in one of the Coldrice house bands The Big Bang. That’s a Coldrice fact. Tell your friends and they’ll think you’re dead cool. Full marks to the band for playing one of the most obscure cover versions ever (by a band who ‘only ever released one single in 1968’)…it might not be the kind of crowd pleaser that you’d get if you played Robbie’s Angels, but that’s probably a very, very good thing... Sick of all the niceness? Vinny And The Curse will drag you by your ankles back to where you belong. The duo from Birmingham have risen The Gories garage rockabilly rawness from the relics and thrown out some crackin demos. 'Never Say Never Again' posted below is the more subdue of the selection, but hit up their Myspace for some more. 'The Change In Me' is a belter. They are doing a few live dates in the near future. After seeing them a couple of weeks back, I would definitely say you should get to see them... From Superace Blog.
