.. .. .. .. .. A typical street organ in Holland is mounted on a three wheeled cart and pushed through the city streets where the operator stops and plays for donations. ...... -

Power for the organ can be supplied by hand by turning a large fly wheel, which operators the pump to create air presurre and moves the folding music books activiating the pipes. Large street organs first appeared in European cities around 1785. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Johanna VanderHeyden is interviewed by Rutgers University professor Angus Kress-Gillespie about her violanta street organ for an upcoming program on EBTV Channel 3. BUTTZVILLE -- Over the years Johanna VanderHeyden has delighted music lovers through out the county with melodious waltzes and spirited festival music played by her historic Violanta street organ during events including the annual Belvidere Victorian Days. Next month, she will share the history of the Netherlands tradition during a television show being aired by EBTV. VanderHeyden recently shared the surprising story of the 88-year-old street organ's survival during wartime and how she and her husband managed to bring the show piece from Holland to their Buttzville home. She talked to the host and camera crew while filming an "Old Ways in New Jersey" television show, which is set to air on EBTV channel 3 in East Brunswick sometime in November. The show will then be distributed to other television networks throughout the state. Each time Johanna VanderHeyden hears the tunes being played by her historic Violanta street organ she is transported back to days gone by of growing up in the Netherlands, where street organs are a time honored custom for the people. "Every town had a street organ. It was very fashionable," VanderHeyden explained. "They would push it through the streets." VanderHeyden's street organ, called Violanta, which means "little powerful", was built in 1920. Following in tradition, the large organ was originally used to play music at summer festivals and was pushed along streets in the spring, fall and wintertime. Until World War II when the music was silenced when Violanta was dismantled, separated and hidden away. "During WWII there were no street organs at all. The Nazi's were confiscating them so the owners took them apart and hid them," VanderHeyden said. "After the war, people knew the war was over because the street organs came back onto the streets." Violanta, however, became the "forgotten street organ" and remained in its various hiding places for 35 years before falling into the hands of master craftsman and artist. "It took him many years to find all the pieces and put them together," VanderHeyden explained. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. He lovingly restored and painted the organ. His painstaking restoration included the organ's internal music center, which has 68 wooden pipes, drums, cymbals, violins, flutes, large bellows, and castanets. He then painted the intricate carved exterior pieces with bright flowers and swirls of pink, gold, and blue; a scene depicting Holland's green pastures and lakes; while two vivid portraits of beautiful gypsy girls look out at listeners from either side. Dominating the center of the piece is a mechanical conductor whose arms move up and down in time to the music. The couple had the delicate piece crated and shipped by boat to the Philadelphia port. The Violanta's music is run mechanically with a motor. Traditionally, however, vendors would crank the organs for hours on end. The books of music are "read" by the organ like a player piano and range in pieces from American to classical and European. ...... The "Old Ways in New Jersey" television show was created by EBTV to shed light on historical traditions that remain in society today. The monthly show, which aired for the first time in October, is produced and hosted by Professor Angus Kress Gillespie, with the American Studies Department at Rutgers University and founder of the New Jersey Folk Festival. On the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 14, Gillespie sat down for a one on one interview with VanderHeyden in front of her Violanta while cameraman David Ambrosy shot footage for the show. The Violanta show will air on Tuesdays at 4 p.m., Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and Sundays at 12 noon and 10:30 p.m. throughout November. Once the show is released to other networks it could be viewed by as many as 850,000 households, Gillespie said. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
