| | Television |
My favorite channels are:
DIY Network - VH1 Classic - Link TV (bring back First People's TV! - PBS (Bill Moyers On Faith and Reason is pretty good) - A&E - History Channel/History International - National Geographic Channel - Discovery Channel - Learning Channel - CNN - Court TV - Science Channel - Sleuth Channel - Comedy Central - TCM

And the only reality show I really allow myself is Kimora Lee Simmons' Life in the Fab Lane. It's inspiring to see such a confident and empowered woman, and I'm awed by the craziness of her life! | | Books | Books that have changed my way of thinking, or at least inspired me!
The Bible
I see the Word as more of a friend and companion than a book, but it needs to be said that it is also a rich and vibrant work of literature; and the very first artistic achievement.
MacBeth - William Shakespeare
Intrigue, greed and lust for power, and one evil freaking woman. What more do you need for an engrossing story? See also: Hamlet, Titus Androdicus.
A Vindication of Rights of Woman - Mary Wollestonecraft
Wow. This text was the genesis of what we know as anarcha-feminism. Brilliant and waaaaaaay ahead of her time; Mary makes so many different statements here. She calls for the dismantling of militarism, is the perhaps the first woman to have pointed her finger straight to the objectification of women, and much more. The entire time I read this book my reactions where along the continum of "Are you out of your freaking mind?!" and "Right on!" Truth be told, Mary was "out of her freaking mind", and indeed, her husband actually apologized for her "insanity". But look what we got out of it! I can't say I think the world really needs anarchy right now but I can't deny Mary's great intelligence and foresight. Random Trivia: Mary is the mother of the woman responsible for Frankenstein. Neat huh?
The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
Before leaving this world, Sylvia left us with this mindblowing account of her heartbreaking descent into madness. Many years from now, when people are discussing the genre of the mental illness account, this one will be the shining star. See also: Ariel...I am still trying to get a copy of The Colossus.
Touched With Fire: Manic Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament - Kay Redfield Jamison
It is said that the greatest art is born about of pain, and much has been said of the archetype of the tortured genius. This book lends much credibility to this belief and discusses the struggles of many gifted writers, artists, and musicians. The list in the back of the book of those gifted creators who suffer or are thought to have suffered from manic-depressive illness will have you saying to yourself, "Well that explains... (*insert tortured genius here*)" See also: An Unquiet Mind, Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou
The harrowing yet ultimately inspiring account of the early years of an extraordinary woman with boundless talent, heart, and vision. See also: Anything she has ever written. Seriously.
Woman At Point Zero - Nawal El Saadawi
Gritty window into what it was like to be born into limited opportunity and freedom (i.e A WOMAN) in the Middle East during the mid 20th century. Firdaus, this novel's anti-heroine, is no weak victim, however. See also: The Hidden Face of Eve, God Dies By the Nile.
Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul - John & Stasi Eldredge
Such a passionate defense of traditional Western concepts of femininity and what it means to be a woman of God. And yet, there is something quite subversive and freeing in what is shared here. It's also one of the few books out of the evangelical circle that is recognizant of the oppression of women and the societal ills such as female genital mutilation (FGM), sexual assault and the all pervasive low self-esteem that have befallen women. It should be noted that Stasi was active during the 2nd wave of feminism, and as a result imo, she brings a fresh perspective to the table. I found myself relating very much. This book was a breath of fresh air. See also: The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord (by T.D. Jakes)
Race and Manifest Destiny: The Origins of American Racial Anglo-Saxonism - Reginard Horsman
This book infuriated me! Sterile academic language, yet each quotation from the so-called progressive thinkers and leaders of the 18th and 19th centuries is more damning than the one that preceeded it, and illuminates such profound ignorance. My copy is coming apart from all the times I hurled it at the wall in anger. Alon Pinkas would do well to read this book.
The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
This book was banned in the area of California I hail from. The colossus that is the agribuisness industry tried in vain to supress it's message. And don't think for a minute they aren't still trying.
Delano: The Story of the California Grape Strike - John Gregory Dunne
Excellent account of the Grape Strike. It exposes the tactics and yes, bigotry of the growers. A must read.
A Light In the Attic - Shel Silverstein
This wonderful collection was my introduction to the art of the written word. These poems so beautifully capture the whimsy of childhood, but Shel is not just for children, by far! See also: Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Giving Tree
Bulfinch's Mythology
When I was about 6 years old, my uncle gave my mother a copy of this book. I would run off and hide with it. The book was for all intents and purposes mine.
The Velveteen Rabbit - Margery Williams
Beautiful reminder that agape love takes all our scars, our imperfections, the wear and tear of life and love, takes us as we are, and allows us to become real and whole under the shadow of its wings.
Conquest: Sexual Violence and American Indian Genocide - Andrea Smith
Excellent text and analysis. Explores at length the many ways the Indian woman has been individually and collectively violated. Highly recommended.
Don't Believe It! How Lies Become News - Alexandra Kitty
This book has shown me not to take anything I see or read in the media immediately at face value. It also inspired me to work harder at being aware of current events.
[Ok, there's zillions of other books I could list, but we don't have all day...Some others are the Vagina Monologues, Black Elk Speaks, etc.]
Favorite Magazines:
Psychology Today - The Smithsonian - Latina - Time - Newsweek - Bitch - Old issues of National Geographic - The Chronicle of Higher Education - Christianity Today - Today's Christian Woman
And...I confess...I enjoy John Grisham novels. (Shhhh, don't tell Heather...she'll disown me!)

About me:
O'siyo (hi) and wado (thank you) for visiting my profile!
Who is Annaleigh?
I am an Indian and a Chicana - My father was Tennesee Cherokee/Alabama Chickasaw/Louisiana Choctaw, and my mother is of Mexican amd Texas Apache descent. I have a rich heritage.
I am a Christian and a Unitarian Universalist - I also have found some comfort from Buddhist teachings.
I am an indie fashion designer - From the comfort of my own home, I create jewelry, handbags, and accessories.
I am college student - I have been plugging away at it for many years. I am double majoring in Art and Business Administration.
I am an artist I suppose you could say - I am a published poet; I enjoy photography; I dabble in painting, and I grew up doing community and school theater. I have the mood swings & manic depressive diagnosis of an artiste, too! *rolls eyes* LOL
I am also a lover of art in general - I am a member of my local art museum, and am looking for a nice painting for my new home!
I am an activist - For the last 9 years I have participated in anti-abuse/rape activism. I have maintained a survivor site (child sexual abuse survivor here, among other things) and done whatever else I can. I most recently lent my voice and story to the audio documentary Voices of Strength. Although I have been on a personal break from activism the last 18 months, I hope to come back roaring with a face lift to my survivor site.
I am a rock 'n roll nerd & ghetto intellectual - I read incessantly, I watch the news, etc. I am such a nerd that if you look at my profile right now as I am writing this, shaawano posted a comment that he was sending me a CD of a college professor's lecture... FOR FUN. I also have a grudge that in high school when I wanted to see the 90's version of Romeo & Juliet, our local theater showed nothing but freaking Space Jam the entire time.
I am a metalhead - Best genre of music ever!
I am the daughter and granddaughter of childhood migrant farm laborers - There is much honor in farm work in my opinion, but I listen to my mother describe picking potatoes and I know for certain it's a job I don't want. The last time I saw my grandfather alive, just before beginning my first semester of college, he admonished me to study hard. Consquently I take nothing about my education for granted! And uh huh, I support the UFW without apology!
I am a proud pet parent - I have the great joy and privilege for caring for five rescue pets; three cats and two dogs. Two of them are special needs pets as well.
|
Who I'd like to meet:
All kinds of people. Anyone who is interesting. As for notable people, there are a bunch. Dolores Huerta so I could thank her for being an extraordinary leader and person. Dave Mustaine (The General, The Grand Poobah of Thrash Metal, etc.) of Megadeth, as he is actually really sweet and a gentleman despite his reputation for being as friendly as a piranha. James Hetfield, Tori Amos, Kimora Lee Simmons, etc. also.
