The purity of a person's heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals. ~ Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.

My Interests Include: Exercise/working out, music, family, spending time with my husband and son, animal rights, vegetarianism, pets, cats, dogs, orca whales, protecting the environment, cruises, concerts, bowling, friends, Kokopelli, photography, writing, reading, shopping, makeup, computers, internet, jewelry, eBay, movies, Hello Kitty, dining out, Winnie the Pooh, etc. My favorite artists are Wyland and Thomas Kinkade.
I am a total gym rat. When I'm not taking care of my son or my pets, I am working out at the gym or at home. I love what exercise does for my mind and body. I've struggled with my weight my entire life due to the medical problems I had as a child (read my blog) and I am now in the best shape of my life so far, but I am always a work in progress! I just don't feel right when I don't work out.
I am a proud Democrat. I am pro-choice. I am a mother, but I believe women should have the right to abort a pregnancy if they need to. It is their body and their life and no one should be able to stop them from doing what is best for them, especially in cases of rape or health concerns. Government should not have any control or rights over a woman's reproductive system! I consider myself to be an atheist. I have a hard time believing in a "god" when there is so much evil in this world and it's only getting worse. If there were a "god", I don't think "he" would allow all this pain, suffering, and violence to happen in "his" world. Not only that, but there is no logic or scientific proof that "he" exists. I think religion is a silly waste of time and that it makes some people totally nuts. I am anti-war. Killing each other doesn't solve anything and so many innocent civilians end up as casualties. I am obviously for gun control too because guns wind up in the wrong hands all the time. More than 500 children die annually from accidental gunshots! I am for the death penalty. If someone murders someone else, they should be put to death. That is justice for both the victim and the victim's loved ones. I am for stronger laws against cigarette smoking too because it is disgusting and lethal. I am against legalizing marijuana also. Marijuana is not an "innocent" drug. It kills brain cells and damages the lungs and most often leads to doing other illegal drugs. It's illegal for a reason! I have seen firsthand what drugs do to people and I am extremely proud to be drug-free! =)
I am extremely passionate about animals and their rights and consider myself to be an animal rights activist, welfarist, advocate, or whatever you want to call me. I am against all animal cruelty and animal testing! How could anyone not be? How could anyone even think of hurting an innocent animal?? Cruel testing and experimenting on innocent, defenseless animals is immoral, inhumane, and disgusting. They feel pain just like us, yet cannot speak for themselves, so we must speak up for them! Research has even shown that testing done on animals is often insufficient because their biology and anatomy is different than ours and many tests being done on them today are completely barbaric and have no purpose. Animals should be loved and appreciated, not tortured, not experimented on, not used as live shark bait, not killed for their fur, and not used for cruel and dangerous game fighting! And you may think that rodeos and circuses are all fun and games, but have you really seen what is going on? Have you seen those poor innocent horses and cows get thrown around like rag dolls by their throats, kicked, beaten, electric-shocked, and strangled? Rodeos should be banned! Do you know how those elephants in the circus are trained to perform for you? If you're oblivious to what's going on, watch the videos online and educate yourself! Those animals are being tortured for your twisted enjoyment. That is sickening! The more I learn about what is going on in this world, the more I come to hate the human race. Horrible things are happening to animals around the world at the hands of heartless human beings. The Chinese are probably the cruelest in the world. They are boiling and skinning dogs and cats alive for food and for ridiculous fur products! There is no excuse or justification for this insanity! There are sick people setting animals on fire, throwing dogs from rooftops as revenge on ex-lovers, skinning animals alive, putting firecrackers in their mouths, electrocuting them, etc. And every day, horses are being slaughtered. What kind of sick monsters do these things?! Anyone who abuses an animal is pure evil and has no conscience! Because I love and respect animals so much, I have always had very conflicting feelings about eating meat and never ate that much to begin with. I went vegetarian in early 2009 and now eat with a clear conscience and feel healthier. Animals should not have to suffer and die a horrible painful death just to end up in someone's stomach. There are so many other food choices out there now and I have found MorningStar Farms products to be absolutely delicious! Animals have the same right to life as humans do. I hope that someday factory farms will at least start treating the animals they raise for food more humanely... I realize that going vegetarian or vegan is not for everyone, but if meat-eaters were to at least cut back on their meat consumption, they would save lives, improve their health, and help our planet. Factory farming is a huge contributor to global warming! There is no excuse for not cutting back on your meat consumption. If you won't do it for the animals, do it for your future great-grandchildren who may not have a planet left to live on!
And you should always ADOPT a pet from a shelter or animal rescue group and not buy from a breeder or pet store! There are plenty of animals in need of a loving home at your local shelter. It is irresponsible and sickening for people to breed more cats and dogs when thousands are euthanized in shelters every day due to overpopulation! There is absolutely no such thing as a "reputable" or "responsible" breeder as long as innocent animals are dying. Breeders are adding to the increasing problem of pet overpopulation. When you buy from a breeder or pet store, you are supporting puppy mills and at the same time, a shelter pet loses out on a home and is killed! An innocent animal shouldn't die just because it has no place to live. What if we were to do that to humans? There simply aren't enough homes for every animal and breeders are adding to this problem just so they can make a profit! Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die! Save a life! Please rescue an animal in need at your local shelter! I cannot stress that enough. Some people argue that they go to breeders because they want a specific breed or want to know the dog's family history, but that is just a lame excuse. You can find pure-bred dogs at shelters and at rescue organizations. 25% of dogs in shelters are pure-bred and there are hundreds of breed specific rescue groups. Just do your homework and look around! It means life or death for an animal, so don't be so selfish! 800 cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters every hour in the United States, which equals about 3 million innocent deaths every single year! Breeding should not be happening as long as these numbers are so high. Be a hero and adopt from a shelter or rescue group. Animals should be treated with love and respect. Anyone who abuses an animal should receive the same punishment they would get for hurting a human being! Animals share this world with us and deserve to live a peaceful life just as we do. I personally have a wonderful life and so much to be grateful for, but I will never truly be happy until all animal suffering around the world has ceased!
BE KIND TO ANIMALS AND TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE KIND TO THEM!
How could anyone think there is nothing wrong with animal testing?! You're fooling yourself if you think doing these types of cruel tests and experiments are helping human beings. All they're doing is torturing innocent animals and wasting money! Animals are like children. You wouldn't do cruel experiments on a child, so why would you do them on a defenseless animal?!
Love is the most important thing in the world and it is the greatest gift you can receive or give. Therefore, I am completely for gay marriage and see nothing wrong with it. Why shouldn't two men or two women get married if they love each other and want to make a lifetime commitment? I don't believe in divorce unless there are extreme circumstances. I believe in commitment and monogamy. I believe in recycling whatever and whenever possible. It's the least you can do to help the environment! Our planet is in serious trouble and we have to do whatever we can to save it! I believe in karma and that you should treat others the way you'd like to be treated. I am for stem cell research. I am against illegal immigration. And I think that if you live in this country, you better damn well speak English and speak it correctly! And I believe former President Bush was the worst leader our country has ever had. He is an idiot, a criminal, a liar, and he should have been impeached!
I know these images are very graphic and disturbing. How could anyone not get upset that this is happening? Animals all over the world are being brutally tortured, some of them are even family pets who have been stolen from their loving homes to be used as meat or for their fur! PLEASE HELP STOP THIS!
There is no excuse for this!!! These people in China are heartless and need to be stopped! We are not living in barbarian times. We certainly do not need fur to keep warm and survive! We need to stop these sick people from doing these horrific things to animals!
Hunting is not a sport, it is murder. A sport involves both sides knowing they're in the game! How would you like to be hunted down in cold blood? Animals in the wild should be left in peace and protected! Anyone who derives pleasure from watching an innocent animal suffer and die is deeply disturbed and statistics show that hunters are more likely to end up abusing or murdering a person later in life. There is no difference between killing an innocent animal and killing a human being! And think about this, more than 1000 people are accidentally shot each year by hunters in the United States and Canada.
SHUT DOWN HUNTINGDON LIFE SCIENCES! THEY TORTURE AND MURDER HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS DAILY IN THE NAME OF "SCIENCE"!
I have been suffering with Trichotillomania, also known as the hair-pulling disorder, since I was 16 years old. I didn't even know there were others out there like me or that my disorder had a name until I was in my early 20's and read a magazine article about a woman who pulled out so much hair that she created a huge bald spot on her head. There is a lot more information out there now about this compulsive behavior disorder, a great resource being www.trich.org.

"Courtney Love The Real Story" by Poppy Z. Brite, "Heavier Than Heaven" by Charles R. Cross, and "Perfect" by Judith McNaught. I mostly read romance novels. As cheesy as that sounds, they're the only type of books that keep me intrigued! I also love reading magazines such as "In Touch", "Life & Style", "Self", "Redbook", "Glamour", "Us", and "People".

People I admire, respect, and look up to are Courtney Love (the most bad-ass chick in music that there will ever be!), Shirley Manson, Christopher Hall (the singer of Stabbing Westward and The Dreaming, in case you don't know!), marine life artist Wyland, Chris Cornell, David Reilly (R.I.P.), Trent Reznor, Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Drew Barrymore, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Gwen Stefani, animal rescuers, anyone who fights to save animals and their rights, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) for doing risky and sometimes absolutely crazy things to save animals' lives, Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd, vegans and vegetarians, my husband Brent for overcoming so many obstacles in his life, my friend Tony who was tragically killed trying to help a stranded motorist on the Bay Bridge, my best friend Elaine because she is the sweetest and most giving person I've ever known, and my parents. My dad worked hard while putting himself through college and earned two degrees in engineering. He is extremely smart and has always been there for me and for anyone who is in need. He continues to do whatever he can to take care of me and now my son also. He never hesitates to do something good for someone else, even when he is in physical pain from his many medical problems. He's simply amazing. He's the best father and grandfather! There is nothing he wouldn't do for our family.
Me with Christopher Hall of The Dreaming (and formerly Stabbing Westward) in Concord, CA on April 25, 2009! One of the best nights of my life! =)

I was born on January 22, 1980 in Walnut Creek, California. Those of you who remember me from grade school know me as Kimberly Becken, but my married name is Horsley. In school, I was the smart girl with the good grades who everyone thought would go to college, but I didn't. I was the overweight nerd who was always very quiet and had low self-esteem. I have changed a lot since then. I finally feel comfortable in my own skin and feel pretty good about the person I've become... I met my husband Brent in June 2000, got engaged on my 21st birthday (January 22, 2001), and we were married on August 24, 2002. We have a wedding webpage on www.TheKnot.com, if you want to check that out. My parents have been married since 1965 and I am an only child, so yes, my parents have been very good to me. ;) My husband and I live in Martinez, California but I spent my first 21 years with my parents in Pleasant Hill which is about 30 miles east of San Francisco. We live just a few minutes away from my parents, which is awesome. Brent and I moved into our home in Martinez back in May 2001 when we were engaged and have been slowly fixing it up ever since. It is a small old house that needed lots of work. I have had pets my entire life and can't imagine life without them. I love my pets as much as I love my child and would do anything for them. I love animals and I fight for their rights! The planet doesn't only belong to humans. It's their world too and ignorant people seem to forget that. I have always had a deep love and connection to animals...
Our son Matthew William was born November 24, 2006, the day after Thanksgiving. He weighed 7 pounds, 11.6 ounces and measured 20 inches long. Being a mother is incredible and even better than I expected. I love my son more than anything in the entire universe! He amazes me every day. :) I listen to mostly alternative rock, but also listen to dance, new age, classical, and some country. I love going to concerts, but don't get to go nearly as often as I used to. And I am not a spontaneous person at all. I live by routines and schedules because that is what's comfortable for me. I am not one to embrace change, unless it is a really good change like when I grew out my bangs. That was a terrific change! LOL ;) I'm also not ashamed to admit that I am a high-maintenance chick! I never leave the house without a full face of makeup! I try to always look and feel my best. And as much as I love seeing new places and making fun memories, I am a total homebody. My favorite place in the world is home. But I love going out to dinner and drinks with my girlfriends!
I wore glasses from the time I was 8 years old until I was 22. I had LASIK surgery done on March 30, 2002 and went from having 20/800 to nearly 20/20 eyesight! It has totally changed my life! =) Anyone who is thinking about having it done should do it! It does hurt, but the procedure is quick and totally worth it!
I am a very passionate and emotional person. I'm a perfectionist. I am stubborn, opinionated, and strong-willed. I can be both shy and outgoing. I can be very self-conscious and I can also be confident. I will tell you exactly how I feel because I stand up for what I believe in. I am honest and truthful. And I am loyal to those who deserve it. This is who I am and if you don't like it, that's tough. I won't change who I am for anyone. I love life, but I'm very angry about the chaos happening in the world and I wish I could do something more about it. It scares me that my son will grow up in a war-torn and seriously damaged society where idiots are in positions of power and they only care about money, not the welfare of the people or innocent animals. War is not the answer to anything! And I don't understand why politicians are just now acknowledging global warming when I knew about it at the age of ten... I have been extremely passionate about animal rights since I was a child and finally went vegetarian in January 2009. All life is precious! I enjoy working out at the gym or at home, spending time with my husband and our son, taking care of our pets, hanging out with my great friends when time allows, writing, reading, bowling (not often enough), going to concerts, dining out, spending time with family, photography, etc. I'm happiest relaxing at home with my family and pets. I worked at the Contra Costa Times newspaper in Walnut Creek from January 1999 until July 2006. Now I am a stay-at-home mom to our beautiful son. My husband has been a union electrician since December 2001 and he is a wonderful father!

Since I posted my Japan pieces, my Space has come under intense scrutiny from diverse sources in Japan. Latest is a series of 30 hits over the last 48 hours, from a source, would you believe, right within the grounds of the Japanese Imperial Palace!
Now that I have inadvertently captured His Majesty's attention, I may as well take this opportunity to open to him my heart and mind, and thereby to the whole people of Japan. This what I have to say:
It wiped out 85% of all species on Earth in the End-Permian Mass Extinction 251 million years ago, and can do it again, right now. The much milder Cretaceous Crisis was the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Global warming is real and unfolding. The deniers are either blind or lying.
Thank you for the birthday wishes.. Sorry it took me so long to thank you for them. I don't get on here very often anymore. Hope you and your family have a wonderful & cruelty free thanksgiving tomorrow! Lots of love from me and the fur babies :)
On September 14, 2007, Wisconsin activst Amy Burns sent out a circular urging her readers to go to the Baltimore Sun to join in what is destined to be one of its hottest forums ever, a war of minds over the "sport" of hunting, with emphasis on bow-hunting. While her readers began pondering, comments from the pro-hunting side came in hard and fast. "America's most-hated Anti" Anthony Marr jumped in head first, and so did leading anti-huntresses Tierra and Mamasita. Amazingly, the battle is still raging as we speak, more than two years later in November 23, 2009! The total number of comments so far has exceeded 93,000, and growing. This is a phenomenon, and destined to be a classic, not to be missed if you care about animals at all.
