MoviesI honestly don't watch movies all that often, though when I like films I am deeply in love with them. I like watching movies with other people, I don't often watch them alone. Here is a random and incomplete sampling of some: Gattaca. The Reflecting Skin. V for Vendetta ;) Sarathinkball. Bleach. Titus. Stoker's Dracula. Pretty much all David Lynch, especially his entry for the Lumiere project. The Virgin Suicides. Lost in Translation. Edward Scissorhands.
Firstly, being an unabashed aesthete, I like films with exquisite cinematography and a unique vision. In fact, I find it difficult to focus on a film that isn't shot well, which kind of throws out most of the Dogma '95 stuff. I'm sorry, but I am NOT looking for "realism" in film. Why fucking shoot a film if you're trying to recreate "real" life? Secondly, I am drawn to films (and people) with a sense of overpowering drama. Thirdly, I like excellent soundtracks. These are the three reasons why I praise Gattaca so highly. All the lasting love affairs with films I have are for these reasons.
TelevisionI exhaustively pirate various TV shows, but I don't have a TV. I'm very vocally, and negatively, opinionated about the phenomenon of television. Nonetheless, count these among my favorites: Simpsons (up to season 15, the rest is not worth acknowledging), Family Guy, NewsRadio (for real, I used to love that show), Twin Peaks, Star Trek: The Next Generation (fuck yes), Lost.
Books
..

Favorites:
Italo Calvino, Jorge Luis Borges, Herman Melville and Umberto Eco are proof to me of the existence of true, sublime beauty in literature. Seriously.

Books by me:
Valid, Exchange of Secrets, The Desire to Desire, Invasion Journal, Things Which are Not, Shaftway, Magnesium City & 1:00AM.

Poetry:
Modern and Romantic from Keats to Donald Justice and Mark Strand. My favorite poets would have to be: Baudelaire, Andre Breton, Poe and Keats, but my poetry shelf is also happily home to Dickenson, Pinsky, Atwood, Coleridge, Plath, Auden and Pound, and countless more in a variety of anthologies and collections.

Plausibly Relevant and Possibly Entertaining Links:
The Rare Book Room - Pages from my books.
www.epiphanus.net - Everything online pertaining to me.
Phrenolog - My actual blog. Almost exclusively depressing and despondent.
Gallery - Self-promoting photoganda and questionable miscellanea.

limina.studio - design/collaboration/consultation.

Notice: Hi! If I don't know you in person and you want to "friend" me, which sounds like an awfully sinister verb, you can at least send me a message. I don't add people I don't know without some kind of repoire ;)

Assorted and Sundry Facts about Teddles:

  1. I do a lot of freelance graphic design, Flash design/coding as limina.studio.
  2. I write music for a few projects. Among them: current_working_directory, Mainspring, and an industrial / hard EBM project named STAUB.
  3. (actually 2b) Music composition, gear, mixing, engineering, etc.. I also play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and whatever else makes noise.
  4. I occasionally work as an assistant camera on films. I also used to do a lot of video editing and post-production for my last job.
  5. I am a Romantic. Define that as you will. I am inspired by the enigmatic and the mysterious. However...
  6. The most romantic idea I can conceive of is that the universe is not inherently unknowable, and that humans are not only capable of achieving that ultimate knowledge, but will inevitably achieve it. Pursuant to that conceit, I personally endeavor to increase my own knowledge as long as I have the power, and if at all possible, contribute to the greater knowledge of all humanity. Whee!
  7. Yes: I used to participate in Rennaissance Fairs. They still hold a great deal of wistful delight for me.
  8. I like collecting books. For instance, old and first editions of Peake's Gormenghast trilogy. I'm always on the lookout for good bilingual editions of German poetry and literature, too (they're hard to find).
  9. I am a vocal proponent of attentive spelling and grammar.
  10. I absolutely will not stand for ignorance of any kind. All around me I witness daily the astonishing and stultifying effects of simple ignorance. There can be no possible excuse for not making an effort to learn.
  11. I make keyholes into rooms and write archipoesy.

Fascinations and Esoteric Hobbies:

  1. Literature theory. Especially that pertaining to aesthetics and poetics.
  2. Architecture theory. Very closely related to 1). I tend to think of Architecture as a subset of Poetry.
  3. Semiotics. The field that ties 1) and 2) together for me. Mainly I'm interested in how the signs of architecture and poetry signify to their "readers" and how meaning is conveyed and construed. This also vaguely connects into Phenomenology. You might as well throw Film theory into this mix as well for similar reasons.
  4. Quantum Physics. All physical and theoretical sciences tend to offer something I'm amazed by.
  5. Child and developmental psychology. For many of the same reasons as 3). Mainly I'm amazed by the state of constantly novel experience that very young children go through. I want to feel like that all the time :)
  6. Neuroscience / neuroanatomy. Mainly because of how it can give rise to human language and consciousness, both emergent properties of the brain, in my righteous and vehement opinion. Speaking of...
  7. Emergence. The phenomenon of emergent behavior and the properties of emergent systems. I'm fascinated at how much of the universe is basically emergent. In my opinion all of nature is effectively an emergent system (physics + initial conditions = our present universe). Thus...
  8. Determinism. I'm conviced that ours is a deterministic universe. Quantum physics, you say? Hawking Radiation, you say? Read carefully: causality is never actually broken. ... I think.
  9. I am also STRONGLY ANTI-DRM and I get really angry and vocal about the subject.
  10. Interface design. I love novel and well-executed interfaces, whether in software or hardware, and I love inventing and developing them. I've been doing this, I realized, almost my whole life (in one form or another). It'd be a dream-come-true to work for Apple or IDEO or maybe Google, even as a consultant (or maybe, better as a consultant!)
  11. Steampunks, rivetheads and gothypantses!

That's all I can think of for the moment.

Who I'd like to meet:
  1. Paint-smeared situationistas with penchants for bikes and danger.
  2. People who fall asleep to Lustmord and Stars of the Lid
  3. Librarian-glasses-wearing semioticians with an urge for sudden, complete abandon.
  4. Shoegazers.
  5. Malignant heterodox Dutch theologians. (Seth currently occupies this position)
  6. Fired retainers to the Princess of Lichtenstein.
  7. M83.
  8. Margot Tenenbaum.
  9. Erudite vagabonds.
  10. OhGr!

YES! I do too, but I can't breathe, I can't sleep and my head is throbbing....I went to the Pharmacy last night and she hooked me up, so I hope with these meds I can get to feeling better. I am not coming in this afternoon to work. We might actually do that. Send a text my way and remind me, if you don't mind. I'd love to do that! We are SOOO loving our vacation time and love being around people too. the extra money we made from taking those paid surveys online helped out so much!! you should really do them too; i mean, hey, the extra money comes in handy, right? i guess you'll have to type the link into internet explorer or whatever, but here it is:
