VIRGINIA A. CALVINO
Has been associated with the arts and has participated in different aspects of the
field since her childhood. Having studied directly under the French artists Fabricius
and Bourdett for more than six years. She has created a unique and extremely
difficult technique with pastels on canvas for over twenty six years.
She is also well versed in oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal and pencil.
Virginia’s contributions to the community included the Laguna Gloria Arts Museum; Texas School for the Deaf; Austin Symphony Square, City of Austin PARD;
Travis County Services for the Deaf; The Deaf Senior Citizens Center, as well as volunteer work for the elderly in other Austin locations. She has also served to judge paintings, ceramics and plaster in the T.H.C.A. Statewide senior games and art contests. other involvements included volunteer work in various schools in the State of Texas
since 1976.
Her teaching talents include arts and crafts for children and adults, for the multi-
handicapped and the hearing impaired, utilizing her sign language skills, Latin-
American dance and conversational Spanish sign language for the hearing. She also
does face painting for various festivals throughout the state.
Virginia has also written an unpublished Arts and Crafts book for children.
Membership and organizations included the Women’s Caucus for the Arts, San
Antonio, Texas; Ladies of Charity, Austin, Texas; Austin Chamber of Commerce,
Austin, Texas; The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, San Antonio, Texas; Women
and Their Work, Austin, Texas, American Red Cross, Austin, Texas; The New-
Comers Club, San Juan, Puerto Rico; The International Women’s Club, Austin,
Texas; The Women’s Club of Aruba, and The Creative Arts Society, Austin, Texas.
Volunteer work in Aruba included the cover illustration of the book Mi Bida y Aids,
by Aruban author Ruben Odor; Illustrations for F.E.P.O. (local foundation for the
hearing impaired); juror for the poster contest for Aids prevention during the
International Aids Day; face painting artist at Imelda Hoff Elementary School for
Sinterklaas (Christmas) celebration, and teaching manual crafts to deaf Aruban
