About me:
For a number of years I’ve been traveling with carnivals across the country capturing a slice of Americana, using the colorful carnival midway at county fairs as the backdrop. I’ve then gone behind this backdrop into another reality of the carnival, a black and white grittiness, to document the life of the Carny. I have interviewed the carnies and use their stories as quotes throughout the book. Often edgy and sometimes heartbreakingly personal, these stories give a compelling portrait of the renegade and disenfranchised society butting up against sugar spun Americana. The carnival is both a provider of nostalgia and sanctuary depending on which side one enters onto the Midway.
2007 CARNY: Americana on the Midway was published by Umbrage Editions.
