Bio
.. .. ..........Visage Bio.................. ........ ........ ........ ........ ...... ..VISAGE, the ..Bahamas..’ number one party band, was formed in 1981 when it’s leader, Obi Pindling, returned home to the ..Bahamas.. from law school in the ....United Kingdom....... ..At that time, the band’s repertoire consisted primarily of American R&B, reggae and Bahamian junkanoo and rake n’ scrape... ..In 1986, after the band leader’s very first visit to Carnival in ..Trinidad.., the band added soca to its repertoire..... ...... ...... ...... ..Though, at home today, Visage is known ....primarily.... known as a high-energy soca band, this is terribly misleading... ..Their energetic, non-stop, high-power stage performances are now legendary in the ....Bahamas..... Without a doubt, however Visage is perhaps, the most versatile live band in the ....Bahamas.... today effortlessly moving from genre to genre during their performances... ..This versatility has become Visage’s trademark as they are more than adequately capable of satisfying audiences of almost any age demographic... ..On one occasion, while performing at the annual Red Ribbon Ball, one patron came up to the band during one of its breaks to congratulate the band on its dinner jazz repertoire... ..He said, when he entered the Ballroom and heard the music he was shocked to see in the programme that the entertainment being provided for the evening was by Visage – clearly in shock as to level and standard of the music... ...... ...... ...... ...... ..Visage, started its recording career in 1983 with the release of “Junk-A-Jam”, followed in 1985 with the release of “Emmie”. After a ten year lay-off, Visage ended its recording hiatus culminating in the release in mid-1996 of their very first album/CD which was entitled “Energy”... ..This was aptly described, by a Barbadian journalist writing in a regional magazine called “Ringbang”, as a “true Caribbean CD” featuring Junkanoo, soca and reggae... ..This CD spawned as many as seven hit singles and introduced the ....Bahamas...., and indeed the world, to another side of Visage... ..Hits like “Das Junkanoo”, “Conch Soup” and “Energy” were heard on every radio station, party and club throughout the ..Bahamas.. and the ..Caribbean..... ..Indeed, the title track,“Energy” was the genesis of Visage’s sound which they have called “Socanoo” – a fusion of Soca and junkanoo..... ...... ...... ...... ..The success of the “Golden Girls” in the World Championships in 1999 and the Olympics in 2000 forced Visage back into the studio which resulted in the release of more Socanoo from Visage... ..This was the infectious celebratory “National Anthem” of the ....Bahamas.... at the time entitled, “Put Ya Flags Up”... ..Who can forget ….. “Pauline, Flags Up! Chandra, Flags Up !! Eldece, Hands Up! Debbie, Flags Up! Savatheda, Flags up!”.. ...... ....The undoubted heavy influence of soca fused with the Junkanoo rhythms are again, clearly audible in this tune... ...... ...... ...... ....Riding the wave of the exceptional success of “Put Ya Flags Up”, Visage ventured back into the studio and over the next four years, releasing three additional CD’s, entitled “Brigga Dum Bram”, “Power” and “Xplosion”... ..We all remember the dance-floor effect of their soca remake of “Hold Ya Head”; their fusion of soca and Bahamian culture in “Ring Play”. .. ..The remake of “Hold Ya Head” catapulted Visage to international success with tremendous airplay in the Eastern Caribbean, ..New York.., ....Miami.... and other major soca markets... ..Indeed, the song was so popular, it was licenced by VP Records (the largest distributor of Caribbean music internationally) in ....New York.... and appeared on their compilation CD “Soca Gold 2001”..... ...... ...... ....The “Power” CD, released in December 2002 contained another smash hit for the band entitled “Still Need A Man” which was initially nominated for a Cacique Award at home but which was ultimately pulled from the nomination list on the ground that “it wasn’t Bahamian”... ..Yes, go figure !!!!.. ..Despite the unfortunate turn of events at home, Visage’s popularity continued to grow at home and internationally... ..“Still Need A Man” featured prominently in playlists of party and radio DJ’s in ..Trinidad.. for Carnival 2003. More international recognition came for Visage as VP Records had once again licensed a Visage song – this time it was “Still Need A Man” for their “Soca Gold 2003” compilation”... ...... ...... ...... ....In December 2003, Visage released their fourth CD entitled “Xplosion” and featured among its hits, the socanoo single “Bahamas Have A Junkanoo” which was a collaboration between Visage and Ronnie Mcintosh, former lead male vocalist of top Trinidadian band, “Atlantik” – the same band still headed today by soca queen, Destra..... ...... ...... ....Visage’s venture into the soca market resulted in many important “firsts” in Bahamian music and entertainment history:-.... ...... ...... ......1..... ......First Bahamian band, ever to perform at Miami Carnival..... ......2..... ......First Bahamian band to ever play “on the road” at Miami Carnival, .... ......3..... ......First Bahamian band to compete in an international Carnival (Miami Carnival) ....AND.... to place, having placed second in the “Best Band On The Road” Category in 2000..... ......4..... ......First Bahamian band ever to have a song licensed by VP Records for inclusion on a Caribbean CD for two consecutive years..... ......5..... ......First Bahamian band to ever perform at the prestigious Trinidad Carnival – indeed, three consecutive years – 2002, 2003 and 2004..... ......6..... ......First Bahamian to ever perform “on the road” during the Road March competition in Trinidad Carnival... ...... ...... ...... ....More international recognition came for Visage in 2003 when New Line Cinemas .... ....contracted the band to make a cameo appearance in the movie “After The Sunset” filmed on location in the ....Bahamas......... ...... ...... ....In 2005, Visage decided to devote their creative energy to “home” having been invited to have a song on the “Best of the Best 5” compilation CD resulting in the infectious “Brown Gal”... ..This is extremely pleasing to the band especially having been nominated as “Song Of The Year” in the Cacique Awards 2005 secular division AND making the finals... ...... ...... ...... ....The year 2006 brought more recording success to this dynamic band releasing another indigenous Bahamian rake n’ scrape song entitled “Profilin’”... ..The song was composed by Visage’s own Sonovia Pierre and was an ingenius introspective look at us Bahamians and the way we “carry on bad” at regattas in the country... ..The song became an instant hit on every radio station in the ....Bahamas.... and in every club and party one attended..... ....Having recently invested in their very own recording studio, Bahamians can look out for more new releases from this band with a heavy concentration and dose of indigenous Bahamian sounds and more of their famous soca..... ...... .......... -
