The Vis-à-Vis Society was founded in a year that felt like 1957 by Drs. Ink and Owning (aka Sierra Nelson and Rachel Kessler, of the literary performance group The Typing Explosion), and more recently joined by their associate Dr. Eamer (aka Anne Bradfield - prop wrangler, visual director, and love conductor).
Gathering data from audiences using original poem-surveys, the Vis-à-Vis Society presents its findings in humorous and informative multi-media performances which often include song, dance, and live graphs. Some of their favorite instruments: overhead projectors, the accordion and glockenspiel, portable record players, and snacks.
The Vis-à-Vis Society has performed across the nation (including at the Bridge Motel, Wave Books Poetry Bus tour, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, the Moore Theatre, Bumbershoot, and NY’s Galapagos Art Space). Their Statistical Musical "We Are You" debuted at the NW Film Forum last spring, and their new book of survey-poems plus 7-inch record is currently available at local bookstores (such as Open Books - www.openpoetrybooks.com) and through the Vis-a-Vis Society directly. Dedicated to the poetic analysis of the everyday, the Vis-a-Vis Society continues its work building installations, teaching the polka, crying into telephones, dancing down the shame quotient, and tenderly taking the poetic pulse of every audience they meet.
