  • Bio

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Why would two almost entirely unknown musicians write, record and release two albums worth of material over the course of four years? Purely for the love of doing it. Starting in Milford, CT and Manchester, NH, Dave Novak and Ralph Thompson ended up in San Antonio, TX and Dallas, TX (respectively) by the time the albums had wrapped up. .. After releasing two albums (a self-titled 2001 CD, and 2003’s CD “This is Vitamin Tramp”), initial recording for the next album as well as the process of losing former drummer Joe Sastre started in 2004. In 2006, after a marathon recording of twenty-five songs in two days, they realized that one album wouldn’t be enough to capture the stylistic range of the new material. .. "Since Pflugerville" touches on subjects of change and lives in flux, set to a backdrop of twangy, almost-country-twinged rock and pop-ish tunes. Fans of Old 97s and Ryan Adams might like this, but will probably expect more country than what they've been sold on while reading this review. .. "Robot Exoskeleton" takes more liberties, both sonically and thematically, and shows a willingness to explore the points at which guitar rock now shares commonalities with modern studio enhancements and a kind of organic electronica. Sometimes outright happy, and sometimes downright somber, this album is a joyride in a crappy, overpowered convertible. .. Ralph and Dave have been playing music together since 1995, spending almost ten of those years in SiMent, a southern-Connecticut "Hard Pop" band. During this time, Dave had the lead singer/guitarist role, writing most of the songs, and Ralph on the drums, quietly contributing some of the band's most venerable songs to their repertoire. .. When SiMent's members reached college age, geography often separated its members -- leading to lengths of that band's inactivity. During one of these periods, Ralph suggested the only solution to this exaggerated dilemma was to start a side project. Creating the name "Vitamin Tramp" led to only one possible outcome -- for the side project to actually commence. .. Indeed Vitamin Tramp has outlived its parent band, SiMent, but "Robot Exoskeleton" could be a weird variation of the next SiMent album -- in a slightly alternate universe. Since SiMent had been called "Hard pop" by the New Haven Advocate, and Vitamin Tramp has followed SiMent, the only thing Vitamin Tramp could possibly be billed as would be "Post-pop", Vitamin Tramp's current self-categorized genre. .. For the present time, Vitamin Tramp exists to write, arrange and record music. Perhaps sometime in the near future, a rooftop concert will be in order. .. ...... ......
