   About The Vivaldi Ensemble


The Vivaldi Ensemble is a chamber ensemble rehearsing and performing in Manchester, north-west England. The group comprises strings with a harpsichord/chamber organ and has a core repertoire of Pre-classical and Classical music played on modern instruments, but a wide variety of music is played - from Bach to Bartok and more. The emphasis is on enjoying effective and stylistic preparation of repertoire to a high standard.

The ensemble originally started life as a small string orchestra, founded over 40 years ago by Rudolf Botta, five years after his arrival in Britain as a refugee of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. At that time he taught violin and viola at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He was acting head of the String Department during the College's merger with the Northern School of Music to become the Royal Northern College of Music in 1972.

Over the years the group has given many concerts for a wide range of charities and has been first-prize winner at various festival competitions.

Rudolf Botta died in January 2001 and it was his wish that the Vivaldi Orchestra should continue, directed by its leader David Fielding. who also works for the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine. David Fielding retired from the position of director in 2008, and The Vivaldi Orchestra became The Vivaldi Ensemble under the guidance of Isabel Stoppani-Lawless.
