About me:
Art for me is not an option or choice; it’s more like an addiction. From early on I had always admired the art in everything both natural and manmade. It has not been until just recently that I have been able to place what I believe to be the genesis of this condition. I have just recently rediscovered a series of small sculptures my father had made for me when I was a child. While working in the fiber optics department at AT&T my father had meticulously crafted these delicate works of art from cast away electronics pieces and parts he found laying around his department. Created in the form of motorcycles, birds and boats, amongst other things, these sculptures served as toys when I was a child but upon their recent rediscovery in box form my childhood I have come to understand the foundation of my love for art, found
objects and the artistic potential in everything.
I have tried to experiment with every medium and discipline of art that has interested me in my ‘career’ as an artist. I say career with a grain of salt seeing how I have never received formal fine arts training but have supported myself as an artist since graduating college with a degree in mass communications. The field of communications appealed to my fascination for film and video and the endless potential and mass impact that this form of communication possesses. Form the start I was less concerned with using film or video in the traditional sense as a narrative storytelling or news disseminating device, but rather as a moving canvass that could convey more abstract and universal concepts and ideas.
This passion for moving images evolved and merged itself with my love for music as I grew & learned my strengths and weakness as a person and artist. At the age of about ten, I received my first guitar for Christmas. I had always been all consumed with music and aspired to emulate those who inspired me. After years of toying with the guitar and taking lessons I came to realize that I was not musically inclined in the conventional sense, in fact I appeared to be completely devoid of rhythm entirely. However, I did not let this stop me in my quest to bring music into my art or art into my music.
I have always enjoyed listening to all types of music and seeing live shows, although for me this meant something different then it does for most. When I would feel truly inspired by sounds, rhythms and beats I would often close my eyes and visualize what this audible inspiration would look like. Before long I began to seek way of sharing this audible vision with the masses.
In High School I met a group of guys in a ‘band’ called Lumpy Balboa Condition (who later became Balboa Condition and then Six O’clock Saints). Again I use the term band loosely because their philosophy was that everybody and nobody was in this band. Everyone who wanted to be involved brought their talents to the table and we all just sat back & watched & listened for what would come of it. After narrowing down the scope of this experiment and focusing energies a bit, I began to add a visual layer to their live shows using anything and everything I could get my hands on. This ‘visual layer’ ranged from multiple television set sculptures running homemade and appropriated footage, to 16 millimeter projectors and educational films to your standard overhead projector loaded up with cutouts, colored liquids & any I could find laying around. As my live video art form or VJ (video jockey) skills evolved I became more refined both in my abilities and equipment. With the introduction of a digital projector, live cameras and video effects processors, my repertoire has grown to incorporate original footage, found and appropriated samples, live video feeds and anything else I can pump through a stream of digital light.
As a VJ I’ve worked with bands and DJs that delve into genres ranging from heavy metal, experimental, and blue grass to rap, house, and funk & soul. After a chance meeting at an art show with a DJ named Rich Johnson (DJ Evolution) in 2001, we became fast friends and collaborators who continue to push each other to new levels and unexplored territories both artistically and spiritually.
Professionally I work as a freelance artist, a muralist, and as the Director of Programs for a nonprofit arts center. My duties include curatorial services for a gallery that showcases international artists, administering and teaching arts’ education programs that serve over 6,000 youth a year, and traveling the state coordinating mosaic murals through the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts Artist in Education Program. My awards include the a Key to the City of York PA (2006) for outstanding achievements in the field of public art, a ‘Style Award’ in the in Susquehanna Style Magazine (2005) and the E.B. Frock Memorial Service Award for outstanding service in the field of juvenile probation/education (2002). I have participated in countless solo and group exhibitions. I am represented in a number of public and private collections. Hey-hey, J. What kind of voodoo do I need to pull to get you to help me out with a mosaic project? I want to do my front porch steps like City Art's, by tiling the risers (is that what you call the front part?). Anyway, I need some guidance about materials and planning. I have some dishes I wanna break that Carter picked out at Salvo. If you ever have a free weekend afternoon, any chance you'd be willing to take beer as payment and do a two-hour residency in my front yard?? Please advise.
