moira smiley & VOCO - Powerful, emotional music with lush four-part vocal harmony and delicious vaudevillian combo of cello, accordion and banjo. Original improvisation-built songs steeped in Appalachia and Eastern Europe. Voted 1 a cappella band in the U.S. in 2007, VOCO is the energy of street singing and the elegance of a string quartet. A new LIVE CD "circle, square, diamond & flag" will emerge in August, 2008. Sweet, hard-driving Americana mixed with crooked eastern European dance and dissonance. It's all rounded out with body-stompin' percussive movement. Joyous, magnificent, hair-raising harmonies - music that mourns and dances at the same time. Called "a truly phenomenal act" by Folkworks Magazine, "fascinating and multi-lingual" by the LA Times.
"Their body percussion sets are a sight to behold!" says Folkworks Magazine. VOCO is taking their music to festivals across the U.S. and Canada. VOCO's singing is lyricism in motion - utterly unique.
Moira-thankyou for finding me in cyberworld! its wonderful to hear stand in that river again..planning any trips to U.K? All the Jacksons would love to see you
You guys just keep getting better and better. It was a real treat to see you perform again and I simply cannot wait for your Colorado trip! Thank you SO much for the birthday song (as embarassing as it was, heh heh). You are amazingly talented and absolutely wonderful people to be around! Much love :)
I've worn out the digital grooves in Blink! Let me know when you get back down to the dirty south, and I'll bring a pack of folks to the show. Peace, luck, and good fortune!
Such amazing singing! I can't get enough of "Dying Californian". I wish I could make your show tonight at McCabes. Have a great time. All the best, Greg www.gregbrandtguitars.com
why of course - i hopped as high as a hummingbird on a horse but i hit my hip on a heavy harp - it hardly hurt and i healed it with heat and homebrew; now i'm quite healthy. Naturally Holywood's been hovering but my horoscope has me hesitant to hobnob with hoodlums & hustlers over a half-baked hallucination of my hypothetical head. (Hello!)
hello... i'm glad you found me! i did indeed love the body percussion. but so many aspects of the music pushed my good buttons. i'm kind of a linguaphile, so i loved that you sing in other languages (and i appreciated the translations as well). and as we briefly talked about, i love all kinds of folk dancing, and come from an irish dancing/music background, so... lots of those ingredients in VOCO. lucky for me!
...the music tracks on my page are a bit outdated, but on my website i have more recent live tracks for the listening, in case you're ever curious.
Thanks for the request. I like your sound! If you get a chance stop by and give some of my songs a listen. I'm coming through LA this summer on my own tour - if you have any ideas for acoustic venues in the area I'd be so grateful. I hope that 2008 has started off well for you! Take care, Kristen
