Sheffield Music Scene - Issue 12 of Sheffield Music Scene live review Volcanoes EP Launch page 62-69 ...
Music News Oct 09 - Refreshing and interesting, Volcanoes are extremely listenable, extremely entertaining and extremely exciting.
I Like Music Oct 09 - The release showcases the multitude of ideas and enchanting song writing ability that Volcanoes possess. Boasting an abundance of passion, catchy melodies and instantly infectious bass lines Shaking That Brass, including lead tracks Temple and What You Came For, confirms that Volcanoes have their teeth clenched deep in to the UK Indie scene.
Tasty Fanzine - From Sheffield, Volcanoes are clearly adherents of the Foals school of thunderous drum n bass and twisted introspection. They also take cues from the folksy meanderings of The Coral and the wistful angst of British Sea Power.
Get Ready To Rock - Volcanoes are a highly acclaimed four piece from Sheffield and Leeds. The 'Shake That Brass EP' out October 26th, features five tracks and presumably is to whet the appetite for an album release in the early part of 2010.
Opening track 'Temple' is perfectly sums up the entire EP. A catchy mix of brash youth ala 'The Arctic Monkeys' but jazzy and much funkier with a melody that you'll find yourself whistling along to for hours on end.
The 405 Picks - When we get our artist picks back they usually admit one of two things; either the band/artist in question sees it as a quick and easy little PR exercise or they put a little soul into and seem genuinely to enjoy introducing themselves to the wider world. Volcanoes quite definitely fall into the latter camp (gladly) and likewise their quirky, brass-tinged, soulful tunes are genuine and highly enjoyable. Thanks boys!
BBC Humberside Raw Talent meets the Volcanoes -
After playing their live session for Raw Talent on Sunday 2nd August we have become very fond of The Volcanoes.
One of the happiest bands we have had in for a while. The four piece were nervous but impressed us.
Unpeeled - Takes four, maybe five notes of "Temple" and I like them. I just don't know why yet. The fat, but jagged riff is a bit on the Blur side, the jazz and the mess tick boxes for Sparks, the better bits of 10cc and some other bands they've never heard of. They go on, in their busy, busy, mega-full-mix way and then the funk is tuned in, turned up for "What You Came For" and you clock the accent and you wonder if this is some kind of Arctic Monkey alter/altar ego trip. You know, releasing something that actually deserves the hype, but under an assumed name?
Tuna The Day - Today's TunA is an absolute belter from Volcanoes. This Sheffield 4-piece have been causing a stir of much magnitude and if their EP Shaking That Brass (out Oct 5) is an indication of their splendidnifity then the world will be erupting to the sounds of musical lava very soon.
Leeds Music Scene May 09 - Live Review - After the recent release of Volcanoes' EP 'Shaking That Brass' with four new songs from the Leeds/Sheffield four piece, their live performance was anticipated with some curiosity. It is always interesting to see if the band can deliver a live performance that is akin to the quality of a produced CD. In the case of Volcanoes, I am pleased to say that they could play live; and well too.
Leeds Music Scene May 09 - Shaking That Brass EP - This Sheffield four piece came crashing out of my stereo and their brand of rock made me smile. Far from allowing their audience to settle into the usual indie snooze where the bands are so determined to sound 'alternative,' Volcanoes actually do offer something to stay awake for.

I think I may have found my new favourite band in the name of Volcanoes and their brilliant EP" -Shaking That Brass-

Destined for crater things....
Glasswerk Leeds
- "Volcanoes seem determined to chisel out songs in their own style, a style which rarely lets the audience settle into an apathetic indie slumber."
Lincoln Bands
- "The songs have a little bit of that sparkle that keeps you guessing, just when you think you've got them sussed they mix it up, not just from song to song but within a song without it sounding like they've lost the plot."
Sheffield Music Hub Live Review
- "It can be quite easy for new bands to rely on one particularly strong song, but Volcanoes quite obviously don't need to. In Samson Bedford they have a dynamic and intense lead singer whose animated stage presence doesn't come across as arrogant or forced, but instead gives them a genuinely likeable persona."
Sheffield Music Hub “Friend of Mine Demo”
"great music in the finest Indie Brit-guitar tradition, deserves to be all over MTV2/Flux"
Sheffield Music Hub “Red Door EP”
"its obvious Volcanoes know how to craft a tune"
Leeds Music Scene
- "The four piece have a stripped back indie blues sound...which has a pretty strong personality of its own"
Caught in the Crossfire
- "Volcanoes are a less than conventional Indie band, attracting a diverse audience"

Review of Fruits of the Fuzz EP Oct 2008The first track 'Long Live My Enemies' is very catchy. The song is built on a smooth, clean guitar riff with a motoring rhythm. The chorus lifts the song to the next level and the whole experience is very enjoyable. The second track, 'Gunter the Shooter' is again really good listen and together they make a really good E.P

Sandman Magazine April 08 / live review
"Headliners Volcanoes overflow with energy and enthusiasm. Their passion for performance and their belief in their music are total. Funky bass lines and upbeat rifts provide a great bedrock onto which a beefy rhythm section builds infectious feeder size choruses, while Samson Bedfords vocals at times recall both Maximo Park's Paul Smith and Kings of Leons Caleb Followill. Volcanoes catchy fast-paced guitar pop will continue to court fans and their live shows will always be worth catching."

No-TiTLE Magazine Leeds May 08 - Random Demo
"Volcanoes smash straight out of the speakers with 'Gunther the Shooter', a very upbeat and punchy number with great sounding, cutting guitars and vocals. It's a short and snappy indie-pop tune and at two and a half minutes that's just perfect. Straight into the next song 'King of the Hill' another upbeat indie opus to tap your converse to accordingly. The breakdown near the end is nice and it breaks up the rhythm before you get shot back into the end. Track three, 'Snake Pass' is a slower song, it feels distant somehow, maybe it's the sound of the guitars. I also feel like there's a nod here in the direction of The Verve at they're hypnotic best. Last song 'Room with the Red Door' is especially good vocally, I'm hearing echoes of Pete Doherty in it's delivery, it's a rocking little number and a fitting close to a cracking CD. I've never seen them live before but I'd like to as I feel there'll be a tad more fire in the songs. That said, wonderful stuff."

"We all know that there's so much more to a band than just the songs, and like a big juicy Christmas Turkey, they've got all the trimmings."
"They look like a band, they've got a certain swagger about them and -best of all- their bass player is called Boa International."
