..A little about the Rottweiler
Did you know?
· The first Rottweiler was admitted to the American Kennel Club Stud Book in 1931.
· The standard for the Rottweiler was adopted in 1935.
· The American Rottweiler Club was organized in 1971 and was approved for its first Specialty Show in 1981.
· The origin of the Rottweiler is not a documented record.
Once this is recognized, actual history tempered by reasonable supposition indicates the likelihood he is descended from one of the drover dogs indigenous to ancient Rome. This drover dog has been described by various accredited sources as having been of the Mastiff type - a dependable, rugged, willing worker, possessed of great intelligence and a strong guarding instinct.
So you want to own a Rottweiler?
The Rottweiler makes a loyal and wonderful companion, but requires time and training. The Rottweiler is a basically calm, confident, and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness.
The Rottweiler is a powerful dog with an inherent desire to protect home and family. The Rottweiler's strong will to work make it an especially good companion dog.
Temperament:
The Rottweiler is basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his environment. He has an inherent desire to protect home and family, and is an intelligent dog of extreme hardness and adaptability with a strong willingness to work, making him especially suited as a companion, guardian and general all-purpose dog.
"Size, Proportion, Substance --Dogs--24 to 27 inches. Bitches--22 to 25 inches, with preferred size being mid-range of each sex. Correct proportion is of primary importance, as long as size is within the standard's range. The length of body, from the prosternum to the rearmost projection of the rump, is slightly longer than the height of the dog at the withers, the most desirable
proportion of the height to length being 9 to 10. The Rottweiler is neither coarse nor shelly. Depth of chest is approximately 50% of the height of the dog. His bone and muscle mass must be sufficient to balance his frame,
filing a compact and very powerful appearance. Serious faults--Lack of proportion, undersized, oversized, reversal of size characteristics.
** Rare Rottweilers **
There are unethical breeders out there that will sell you anything to make $$. Some of these will try to sell you 'rare' Rottweilers. Sometimes they will be selling a 'Rare RED Rottweiler' others will sell a 'Rare Long Haired Rottweiler'. These dogs are 'rare' because they DO NOT fit the Rottweiler breed standard as defined by the AKC or ADRK.
A 'RED' Rottweiler is either the result of heavy inbreeding, or a mix that someone is trying to pass off as pure. Anyone selling 'Rare' Red Rottweilers should be avoided and considered an unethical backyard breeder.
A 'Long Haired Rottweiler ' comes about from a recessive gene found in rotties . Although this is considered undesirable and a disqualification by breed standards, there have not been any health problems associated with this recessive gene. While some of these long haired rotts do turn up in rescue and make wonderful pets, any breeder knowingly breeding for this trait and selling the dogs as 'rare' long haired Rottweilers should be AVOIDED and considered unethical.

..WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GERMAN ROTTWEILER AND THE AMERICAN ROTTWEILER?
By Steve Wolfson
While walking my Rottweiler Bronco, a gentleman approached the two of us and said, "Ob, he's very nice, he must be a German Rottweiler!" I replied, "How did you know that?" He then replied, "I can tell by the size of his head. His head is much bigger than my Rottie's head. German Rottweilers have much bigger heads than the American ones." I told him that he was in error since Bronco was born and raised right here on Long Island, NY. He descends from German stock, but they all do.
Looking still puzzled by my explanation he asked, "Then why all the Rottweilers I see have such small heads and potato stick legs?" That characterization made me laugh. I then replied, "More likely, the ones you are seeing result from a poorly planned breeding program using inferior breeding stock." He told me he had paid a great deal of money for his dog and was disappointed in the way it eventually turned out. I understood his disillusionment and further explained that spending a large sum of money (I was afraid to ask the exact price he paid) was not the correct criterion to procure a quality Rottweiler.
"The German Rottweilers are better", "The American Rottweilers have no bone substance, Are the American Rottweilers from the same breeding stock?" I am asked these questions continually, so I thought it would be a good idea to answer them, perhaps settling this colloquial notion.
What is the difference between the German Rottweiler and the American Rottweiler? There is only one Rottweiler; correct in type* and construction according to the standard. No doubt, untypical and poorly constructed specimens are everywhere. Often, I have encountered Rottweilers purchased as pets (even represented as a show dog) I would consider completely lacking breed type *, yet I know they are pure bred Rottweilers. Why the difference? Variations of size, shape, and head type etc, encountered in the breed happen for two reasons:
A. Normal variance that occurs in the progeny when breeding Sire to Dam
B. Poor planning / Little Concern for the Rottweiler breed (some breedings take place with no motive at all, but for a monetary one).
C. Even when a litter is carefully planned, a percentage within the progeny is observed that varies in type and construction. This is normal.
Not every pup in the litter will be uniform. This divergence is a matter of genetic inheritance which all competent and concerned breeders must deal with each time they decide to plan a litter. When searching for a stud dog to utilize, the experienced breeder does their homework:
1. Researching the pedigrees of Sire and Dam.
2. Ascertaining whether the stud dog and brood bitch will compliment each other.
3. What improvements can be realized in the upcoming litter?
4. What undesirable construction / type faults will possibly surface?
By doing homework, the concerned breeder reduces the occurrence of undesirable flaws and increases their chances of producing desirable traits and a uniformity in the litter. Predicting results and having goals are the hallmark of a concerned, experienced, responsible breeder.
Top quality specimens are produced by thoughtful, selective, hard working breeders. It does not matter what the country of origin is. Conversely, there are plenty of pin headed, potato, stick legged, grossly overweight, giant sized Rottweilers available here and outside the US. However, there are differences when we compare breeding practices. Here are some highlights of the ADRK breeding procedures.
1. The ADRK has strict controls on which are bred.
2. The ADRK requires all dogs for breeding must pass a minimum qualification test called the Ztp (Zuchttauglichkeitprufung). A dog cannot be coupled unless it has passed.
3. The ADRK standard does not allow any missing teeth.
4. Any dog/bitch which is over, or under the height range will not pass the Ztp.
5. All Rottweilers born after 1999 cannot have their tails docked. The practice of docking tails has been stopped. Does this translate into breeding better dogs? One must make a comparative analysis of this and come to a final decision. At the American Rottweiler Club national held in Orlando, Florida, March-2002, I observed some outstanding specimens.
Beware of sales pitches, unethical breeders, claims which cannot be documented. Read, learn, ask detailed questions, go to the shows, become a student of the breed. Do not be fooled by the “Grass is Greener” logic. By virtue of the dog's country of origin does not make it better. This is a premise based in mythology and snob appeal.
*Breed type: Breed type for the Rottweiler is the essence of characteristics* that distinguishes it from others.
*Essence of characteristics: One must carefully read the standard to discover and comprehend the essence of characteristics.

About US
My name is Jennifer Riggs. I am president/founder of Vom Blue RR. We here at Vom Blue are dedicated to helping all of the homeless Rottweilers and other Large breeds in our area. I have 2 children, 1 Rottweiler and 1 Tibetan Mastiff. I have owned and rescued Rottweilers for over 8 years. I know alot about Rottweilers from my own experience and from alot of research. We are located in Evansville,Indiana.
Our Objective
We at Vom Blue Rott Rescue take great pride in being a part of the rescue community. We all love what we do and hope to one day have a sanctuary where all the homeless rotties can live out their lives with love, shelter, care, and exercise. Until then we can only do so much. We run this rescue out of our home so we can only take in a couple at a time. We are trying are best to help all of the homeless rotties in the tri-state. As of right now we only have a few people fostering for us, so it is hard to accomplish that goal. We are also trying to educate the public on rottie behavior, and show people that rotties are one of the best breeds around, and they should be loved like any other dog.(NOT FEARED.)
Adopting a Rescue
Our rescues are not adopted out on a first come first serve basis. They are placed with homes that best fit their needs. Adoption fees range from 100.00 to 300.00. All dogs are fully vetted for their age. We require anyone who adopts from us to fill out an adoption application , sign a contract once approved for adoption , and also agree to a home visit. We also require updates on all of our rescued dogs once they are in their new homes. Fenced yards are not always required ( depending on the dog and location ) but are a plus. All of our dogs are to be kept as indoor dogs and recieve the best care possible. They are NOT allowed to be chained. Breed experience is a plus..but is not always required ( depending on the dog ) . If you think you can follow all of the guidelines and give a rescued dog a forever home...then please fill out an adoption application.
If you are looking for a dog to breed , fight or guard....look elsewhere. Our dogs are placed as companion animals ONLY.
We will take in and adopt out other breeds providing we have spave and funding. Check our website for adoptable pets http://vombluerottrescue.petfinder.org
This site is to provide the background for our rescue and explain the pets and services we have to offer.
We accept owner surrenders when there is room. We also appreciate anyone telling us about a Rottweiler in need of rescue.
All of our rescues are fully vetted (including spay/nueter, shots, HW test, and fecal test).
All of the rescues we place are ones that we would enjoy having ourselves. Each dog is temperment tested and introduced to other dogs and young children. We will list information about each dog with their picture.
"Please Spay/Neuter. IT STOPS THE KILLING!"
Who I'd like to meet:
To Return a Rescue
We like to think we are placing our rescues in forever homes. But then sometimes something comes up and that is not always possible. It is a must that the rescue you adopted from us be returned to us if you can no longer keep the animal . We will explain more about this when you adopt a dog from us.
I would like to meet the people that have abused these animals, they deserve the same treatment that they have given these animals. Some of these dogs Vom Blue has personally rescued .
Bear when we first pulled him from the shelter .
And look at Bear now ! His new name is Wilson
We rescued this girl when she was just 3 weeks old . We had her pulled and transported to Indiana all the way from Dallas Texas ! Here she is when first rescued .
And here she is at 8 weeks old and ready for adoption ! Her name is Dalyce .
We rescued this girl with the help from our friend Mickey from a junkyard in Georgia covered in oil and malnurished . Her name is Gracie !
And here she is in her awesome new home !
This boy was rescued from a high kill shelter in Henderson , KY . Scared , abused and severly underweight . We named him Keiser .
And this is him now all grown up in his wonderful home . His name is now Torque and this family has also adopted 2 other mini rotties from us !!!!
This guy was dumped at the henderson shelter at just 4 weeks old. Vom Blue pulled him and found him an awesome new home once he was old enough . We named him Kilo.
And here is Kilo at 10 months old in his new home !!!
This is Layla a Staffie Terrier . We found her on the side of the road , filthy , scared and starving . We took her in and had her vetted and spayed and found out she was heartworm postitive . We treated her for it and she is now healthy and happy . We later found her owners and they no longer wanted her as she was worthless to them spayed :( She was later placed in an awesome home ...pics in new home coming soon !
This baby boy is Simba he was rescued from a puppy mill . He had never been out of his cage , never walked or loved on and didnt even no what to think about a collar on his neck . We put all our dedication into this boy and found him a wonderful new home once he was socilaized
Here he is with our youngest son they day he went to his forever home !!!
