Some song titles you might be familiar with already: “Noche Escondida,” “Cara de Caramelo,” “Y después,” and Cosas del Destino. These are just four of the favorite names spawned by Vonnell’s debut CD “31 de Febrero.” Although we are leaving out other names for the sake of brevity, the fact that Vonnell has shaken the independent world of the music industry can’t go unmentioned. “31 de Febrero” has received numerous awards including its big day in the powerful and prestigious LA Music Awards sponsored by The Grammy’s ®, in which Vonnell won 4 out of 5 categories, including Album of the Year, Male Vocal of the Year, Song of the Year, among others; and the coveted Firs Place in American Idol Underground’s World category.
What gives Vonnell an edge over the majority of artists is his gung-ho, relentless pursuit of quality within commercial music. Growing up to the sounds of Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzegarld and other legends, Vonnell cares about bringing to the commercial world harmony and phrasing, not weak and redundant hooks; he cares about true lyrics, messages and storytelling, not about “saying something cool” to help sell records. He doesn’t care about being the “next big thing,” he cares about being there for his fans when they want someone that understands them, and when they want—and need—to get away for a while. As he has been quoted before; Vonnell approaches and views music as he does a woman; he doesn’t try to make or understand his songs and fans, he simply loves them.
Shifting a couple of months into the future, at this point, Vonnell, still satisfying the many requests brought to him by “31 de Febrero,” is in the middle of his next production “30 in Rio,” named after a song he composed while admiring the beaches of Leblon, Copacabana and the famous Ipanema:
“I was turning 30 years-old, an age very important in every man’s life, in a place that has been very special and motivating to me ever since I was a child. So it only made sense to me to take advantage of the mystical energy found here, in the Cidade Maravilhosa, and compose a song to help share my emotions and experiences with my fans.” –said Vonnell, in Rio’s Discovery Studios, to Brazilian Grammy-winning producer Marco Brito, which happens to be the producer for “30 in Rio” and for years, has worked with world-renowned artists the likes of Ivan Lins.
This next production, not yet scheduled for release but believed by Vonnell’s own record label, VIMmusic, to be ready this Christmas or early next year, is packed with the young artist’s best performance and compositions so far. As reviewed by some of Rio’s local press, producers and radio personnel, this is the kind of quality artists only dream of achieving no earlier than by their 4th or 5th production; Vonnell’s intense focus, discipline and dedication has brought it to him on his 2nd! Now that’s achievement.
Within “30 in Rio,” we will find powerful compositions such as the highly awaited “I know,” his Italian composition “Se Non Vieni Tu Con Me,” and compositions such as “Há Sempre Um Lugar” and “Morir de Amor.” As you may have noticed, each one of these song titles is in a different language: English, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. This is no coincidence. Although this will be a predominantly English CD, Vonnell’s “30 in Rio” is a multilingual production in which we will find performances in these four languages fluently spoken by the passionate and multitalented artist.
Recently back in the U.S. for a series of requested performances and interviews, Vonnell is scheduled back in Rio de Janeiro later this year to wrap up studio work and post production. Vonnell, the multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and founder of VIMmusic promises to keep all his fans up to date on his latest news and releases. All he we have to do is stay tuned and enjoy the ride.
