KaySpinner Cage 'Em Productions's Interests
|
| General |
"A society's competitive advantage will come not from how well its schools teach the multiplication and periodic tables, but from how well they stimulate imagination and creativity,"
-- Albert Einstein
"One must, from time to time, attempt things that are beyond one's capacity,"
-- Renoir
"The saddest thing in the world is to have a gift and not use it,"
-- Louise Nevelson
"Procrastinate: To drag one's ass in such a pathetic manner as to ensure one's place in life as a loser."
-- Bobby Long (John Travolta) "A Love Song For Bobby Long"
...And so, into the breach...

I LOVE METAL!
So, my personal favorites in no particular order are: Disturbed, Pantera, Tool, Shadows Fall, Sevendust, Godsmack, Clutch, Il Nino, Otep, Motorhead, Meshuggah, Mudvayne, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, too many to count. I can even get into the harder stuff: Dimmur Borgir, Satyricon, Suffocation.
Metal is the exact attitude, frustration, indignation and don't-tell-me-what-to-do fortitude, that if focused has the potential to effect change. In my opinion, nobody ever changed the world singing about how they cheated on their man/woman.
Since I love rock music, it is what I am leaning towards in CAGE 'EM PRODUCTIONS. If you have any favorite bands that you think I should just give a listen to, email me or post a comment!
HOWEVER.....
I love music across the board, so if you have a Jazz or Blues band, contact me anyway. It's not as if I would make your Blues band look like headbangers. My intent is to always bring out the personality of the band or event. Besides, if you are familiar with jazz at all, you know what a good guitar player is. Listening to Jazz is how I came to appreciate how difficult it is to play a really good Metal guitar.
Anyway, if you need something for your EPK, get in touch with me and let's talk!
| | Movies | I am a big TARANTINO fan, I loved 'Grindhouse'.

A SPIKE LEE fan, I loved 'Crooklyn' among others.

There are so many things to look at right now that I can barely keep up with all the things that I want to see. I love strange films, suspenseful fillms, strange suspenseful films. I am not much of a 'chick flick' person, but I do like a well done film so pretty much I am open to most everything.
The film that made me want to go into film is Daughters of the Dust by Juli Dash.

I thought it was a beautiful film that showed the lives of African Americans in the Gullah Islands just off of Georgia. It was beautifully shot and told a true, different story of the lives of actual Black people just outside of the Antebellum South.
WORK SAMPLE DESCRIPTIONS
Since it would take all day to list my favorite films, I will talk instead about my short films.... :)
I have done 5 documentary shorts, 1 music video, 1 narrative and 2 events (1 battle of the bands and one debutante ball). You can check out 5 projects (so far) on this page.

SILVER ATLAS is a band based in CHICAGO, IL A friend and I shot it on two one-chip handycams. This short, was accepted into the Chicago Really Short Film Festival in 2006. Their CD is called "Layover"
Check out their profile: SILVER ATLAS

MILLIGRAM SMILE is a great Hardcore band out of MT. PLEASANT, MI. Jake, Ryan and Steve are great guys. This short project was made for them to use as a part of the Electronic Press Kit for their band. I also made a longer version (23minutes) that they can use also, possibly for a DVD enhancement for their next CD. Their present CD is called "Beautiful Scars and Memories"
Check out their profile at: MILLIGRAM SMILE

TENSION HEAD is a Metal/Hardcore band based out of SAGINAW, MI. Tension Head won an important spot opening for the band HELL YEAH and wanted a video for their MySpace profile in order to showcase their very hardworking band. This documentary short was accepted into the Riverside Saginaw Film Festival and won the Jury Prize of Best Documentary Film. Their CD is called "Fire In The Hole"
Check out their profile at: TENSION HEAD
All of my projects are shot on Panasonic DVX 100a professional digital video camera.
| | Television | When I do watch tv, which is more than usual lately, I watch Sundance Channel, IFC, Bravo! and A&E. I tend to like the kind of reality shows where someone has to actually DO SOMETHING! Top Chef, Top Design, Project Runway, Miami Ink, LA Ink.
There are some shows that I watch, but I would rather walk across hot coals than watch American Idol or Dancing With The Stars or So You Think You Can Sing. (rolling my eyes)
I do like Law & Order: SVU & Criminal Intent, Saving Grace, Mad Men, Damages, Burn Notice, In Plain Sight.
But frankly, I just don't want to watch anyone eat a bug....just not enough money in the world to make me eat a roach.
| | Books | ...sadly, I don't get to read much anymore. I finally finished Rebel Without A Crew by Robert Rodriguez. Thus far, I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in filmmaking.
Also, when I began to write my grant, I bought Shaking The Money Tree by Morrie Warshawski. Both books are pretty inexpensive and I think you should invest in them especially if you are just getting started.
I did read a book called I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell by Tucker Max. The guy is a jackass but the book was funny.....
| | Heroes | "If you're looking for something to be brave about, consider Fine Arts,"
--Robert Frost
Well, maybe not so much heroes, but I admire anyone who gets out there and does something creative, artistic, unusual. You have to be brave to get out there and take a shot at doing something as risky as something artistic, be that theater, writing, dance, music or film. I hope I am learning to be more brave....
But I will say this, though: I will be forever grateful to GAIL SCHMIDT, at NEMAC, the Northeast Michigan Arts Council. I appreciate her belief in my documentary and will always be in her debt for her moral support. Once I get that doc up and running, she will be on the short list of people I tell immediately.
So, here's to every Artist with the stones to go out and follow their creative spirit. Every Musician, Filmmaker, Actor, Dancer, Writer, Painter, Visual Artist and every other person who just can't stand being a drone and steps out in Faith. Who's drinkin'? Social!

About me:
My name is Karyn, online I am Spinner, and I am a freelance videographer/filmmaker. I have been lending my skills mostly to the music arena and have been lucky enough to have done video for some of the best hard rock bands in my area. I have also had the opportunity to videotape an event or two, one debutante ball, one band battle and one narrative which I did not direct, but I did edit. The narrative was for a 48 hour film challenge.
Editing is what I enjoy doing most, though I think my camera skills are pretty good as well. If you need some video work for your band or event you should contact me here. : )
In terms of my background, well, I was in television news for many years before I took a huge leap of faith to pursue filmmaking and video. Though this is not exactly the best economic climate to become an artist. But I love what I have gotten the opportunity to do and hope to make a living at the new career I am pursuing.

Who I'd like to meet:
...who would I like to meet?...hmmm. How about you!
I am adding people in video and filmmaking, especially Michigan Filmmakers. Michigan has alot of people trying to go into film or video, but we don't know each other...well, maybe I just don't know you. I am trying to meet other filmmakers from Michigan and other places. If you are on the site INDIETALK.com, I'll add you right away! Let me know!
I am also adding some bands. I am partial to Rock, Metal and Hardcore, but who knows? I like ALL KINDS of music so don't feel left out if you are a Jazz or Blues person! Send me an add request. Make a comment or drop me an email anyway if you feel like it...
...and everybody else? Well, go on and send me a request as well... :)
I am always looking for friends and kindred spirits. Artists and like-minds. Lots of fun but chill people so if you are cool, drop me a line. If you are in film, video or anything creative, we will probably have alot to talk about! And if you don't have a talent, well, who cares! Fun people are fun people! Join the party!
....and if you need some video work, keep reading......
