Books
Voodoo is a charismatic practice. There is no written Bible ~ so any book written on the subject is inherently both wrong and right. There are many contractions due to Voodoo’s diversity in Africa then is dispersion both geographically and chronologically into the Americas. African Voodoo is not the same as Haitian Voodoo. Haitian Voodoo is not the same as New Orleans Voodoo ~ yet all versions are legitimate within their own contexts.
To best understand, or try to learn about Voodoo, break it into four categories. 1) Religion, in which the practice is an act of faith and all magic is the work of divine spirits. 2) Superstition, in which the practitioner see the Voodoo object or fetish, (gris-gris), as having a magical power in, and of, itself. 3) Folklore, which is the oral traditions and stories, which are handed down from generation to generation either by locality, or ethnicity. 4) Fakelore, which is the misappropriation of folklore either for financial gain, or personal aggrandizement (but, keep in mind, if fakelore survives long enough, it ultimately can become legitimate folklore).
