Voodoo Train is a rockabilly/roots rock trio from Southern California. However, VT is not your typical LA rockabilly nostalgia act that is trying to recreate sounds and look of the 1950's. There are many bands out there that do this and do it well. Instead of jumping on the Sha-Na-Na/Happy Days/It's the 50's all over again bandwagon, VT would rather create something more original and exciting rather than regurgitate a Sun records or That'll Flat Get It rockabilly compilation. Now they may not win over the purists and elitists that seem to run rampant in the Rockabilly crowd these days but they really don't give a shit. Don't get them wrong, VT are true fans and more importantly, students, of the old rockabilly standards and obscure tracks and you never know what cover song will end up in a setlist.
However, VT's original music and their personal spin on cover songs is their strong point and we can only hope they deliver a full length CD soon. Self-penned songs like "Better Off Alone", "Tragic", "Trouble In My Heart" are songs for the romantically disillusioned and challenged while the rocker "Frontline" is about the politics of fear and the post 9/11 roll-back on civil rights. Now how many rockabilly bands are going to write about something like that? They won't because most of them are too busy writing about fucking hot rods and beer.
So if you like to see live rockabilly bands just because it gives you an opportunity to smoke and act cool or show off your pomp or your bangs or your tattoos and pretend like it's 1955 all over again you probably won't like VT. However, if you are into obscure covers done in a new powerful way and new, original music that mixes the guitar of Eddie Cochran and Scotty Moore, the haunting bluesy melodies of New Orleans, the slapback of Memphis, and lyrics that don't talk about hot rods and drinking...then VT is your band and they could use your support.
