8bit pioneer Saitone has just dropped this incredible new track in tribute to Michael Jackson. This song just went live on HearJapan ahead of their DreamHack performance in Sweden. In the hands of Saitone, the funk of Thriller is taken to a new level of blips and razor sharp waves. It's a modern-day mash-up of the biggest icon of the '80s with one of the biggest names producing music using '80s technology!
Saitone and fellow chiptune duo JulieHally will be performing at DreamHack in Sweden. In addition to this new release from Saitone, HearJapan is also offering up another sampler of the new release from JulieHally on November 25th. Unlike Saitone's instrumental style, JulieHally combine their energizing 8bit rock with both male/female vocals sung in a robotic style.
With these two releases, you'll be transported directly into the collective consciousness of thousands of video game fans and surf on their cyber brain-waves. Also be on the lookout for Saitone's next original album which comes out on February 22, 2010!
DreamHack welcomes Saitone and JulieHally with open 8bit arms
2 chiptune acts in Japan will be playing live at one of the largest LAN parties in the world this November.
DreamHack is a giant LAN (local area network) party in Sweden that features video game competitions of all sorts, as well as a place for like-minded people to gather and connect. Since the early '90s the event has gradually grown, eventually setting the Guinness World Record for attendance for such an event in 2007 with over 10,500 computers!
Eventually DreamHack began running more than one event a year. This year's 2009 Winter DreamHack will be host to both Saitone and JulieHally from VORC Records. Saitone has just dropped this incredible new track in tribute to Michael Jackson. Hally from JulieHally is a true chiptune pioneer, having been a champion of the music since it first formed in the '80s. He went on to form VORC.org, a site for the chiptune community to talk about and share their low-bit creations. Julie is an idol, graphic artist, and an iPhone application producer. In 2006, her photo collection, "Samurai Girl" reached number one slot for books on Japan's Amazon ranking.
Saitone and JulieHally will appear at DreamHack's winter 2009 event in Sweden on November 26th. Check out their music and hear what the future sounds like today!

"Ah, yes, 8-bit chiptune. It's music that is performed and composed by using retro game hardware like the Famicom and the Gameboy as instruments. Love it, great stuff."
"Japan's finest chiptune label (and accompanying 8-bit news network), VORC, has written in with word of their latest collection, 8-BIT PROPHET: a tribute to Japanese 80's "techno-pop"/new wave band TM Network, with a particular twist: rather than instrumental covers, all vocals on the album have been produced using Yamaha's singing speech-synth Vocaloid."
"Independent chiptune label VORC Records announced a new tribute album for TM Network for Japanese "techno-pop unit" TM Network, titled 8-bit Prophet, remixing the group's popular songs as chiptune tracks with vocals dropped in by Yamaha's singing synthesizer software."
"Now, all three of these great tastes are smooshed together into one awesome collection from VORC Records. Titled 8bit Prophet: TM Network Tribute - Generated by Chiptuine & Vocaloid, the album consists of eleven songs from a wide range of chiptune producers, wrapped into one incredibly beautiful package (illustrated by TOKIYA.) Follow me across the jump for a full review and sound clips! "
"Vorc Records has released several more samples from its tribute to Japanese “techno-pop unit” TM Network, which you can pick up at HearJapan. The second track in the above clip, “Telephone Line”, is way smooth, one that I’d put on while making eyes at my lady."
"One of the latest new 8-bit music productions is 「8-BIT PROPHET - TM Network Tribute Generated by Chiptune + Vocaloid」a new CD created by Vorc Records that will be on sale from the third of this month in Japan. It is a tribute to TM Network, a important Japanese group from the eighties. It is all chiptune and the voices are all by Hatsune Miku (A Yamaha voice synthesizer). "
"Chiptune. If you're with it, you'll praise its contemporary composers for their amazing ability to increasingly knock out dazzling originals or faithful recreations with a new twist. But if you don't get it, you'll be quick to dismiss the genre as a bunch of eighties-obsessed geeks freaking out over crude beeps. Honestly this description suits me just fine, as I'll readily admit to being an old-school video game nerd anyday. But unless you're a stinking hypocrite, you just have to applaud the efforts of recently-launched VORC Records, who are working so damn hard to bring chitpune to the next level, with international collaboration albums and a major push for the budding genre to hop onto mainstream distribution channels, certainly to the joy of all artists involved."
"Chiptune, specifically 8-bit chiptune, is music that is performed and composed by using retro game hardware like the NES/Famicom and the Game Boy as instruments to make original music not just play existing video game music."
"8-BIT PROPHET is trying to combine Chiptune with Vocaloid. And I have to say, I loved the result."
"I really loved it - it’s amazing. “Self Control” is my personal favorite of all the songs in this album."

"Midway through the first listen, it’s clear that the album’s mix of frenetic rhythms and vintage computing/gaming sounds would drive half of the people at the average holiday party batty within minutes,
which could be good enough reason to include it in a mix (or as a change of pace from standard holiday fare).
We’ll always have a soft spot in our hearts for the King’s College Choir, but for the converted chiptune or adventurous electronica fan who’s looking for some Christmas cheer, Holy 8bit Night is a must-have."
"The album continues along these lines of both serious sonic bliss and childlike blip joy. Through it all, the collection manages to inject loads of life and humanity to the otherwise cold and stark sonic pallet. This is a Christmas album after all. For all of those out there who are tired of the old standards and the agony of their schmaltzy smarm and saccharine goodie-two-shoes lryics, then Holy 8-Bit Night + just might be the modern-day update you've been looking for. It's certainly a must-have for retro-wave aficionados who can purchase it without hesitation."
VORC Records presented Saitone's 1st album release party "Overlapping Spiral in the 3D Dome Theater Synra Dome, Science Museum" on December 17th and 21th 2008. We held a chiprune live in the 3D dome theater. The 3D dome theater called Synra Dome. This name is from Japanese phrase "Synra Banshou (Shinra Banshou)". Synra Banshou mean "All phenomena to happen in this world". The theater has dome-shaped screen that is 10 meters in diameter. Audience can watch high-resolution stereographic images through special kind of glasses. There is only 3 stereographic dome theaters (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai and Synra dome) in the world. Theaters other than Synra dome is used only scientifically. Now therefore, this live is a world's first trial. (These vids is from Gizmodo Japan. Thanks Musha-san!).
"Imagine Tron, only stretched out and wrapped around your face, and you might come close to the experience of being at one of two recent shows held in Japan. The sound, provided by 8-bit maestro Saitone. The visuals, provided by VJ REEL of Lightrythm Visuals. The venue, the Synra Dome in Tokyo"
We held the release event of Saitone's original 1st album "Overlapping Spiral" at Shibuya amate-raxi in Tokyo on November 30. We used 4 projectors and screens in this event. Center (behind an artist), Right and left with see-through screen, and whole one. The VJ label Lightrhythm Visuals, that was awarded Best Content Provider Award from DJ Magazine on 2008, participated as visual support.
Chiptune Silent Live at Khaosan Tokyo NINJA

"Turns out that the next big thing in live musical performances may not be bigger, better and brighter sound systems and light shows, but in fact quite the opposite.
At a recent event in Japan, a number of 8-bit/chiptune musicians came together to perform a "silent live." They did this right in the streets of Akihabara, the defacto gathering place of all things bleeding-edge in Japanese pop culture. Of course, in a fine bit of irony, these performance visionaries were all making their tunes on decades old game systems and handhelds.
Now here's the hook. In order to hear this free show, the audiences had to bring their own pair of headphones. They could then jack in to the performance, enjoying the lo-fi bleeps and crunches in their very own personal headspace. The beauty of this setup is that no one else is bothered by loud noise and it can all be done right out in public."
hey bud i got two covers on my playlist by Failure and Plastmatics, a hard rap song about my old job, a soft ambient song about the afterlife, a comedic parody of rapping about Enterprise D, and a tribal song about the genocide of Native Americans. have a listen and tell me what u think of it?
