As an active member of our local community I have established strong direct links with senior managers in:

Waste collection, Street Cleansing & Recycling at Haringey Accord

    Street lighting

    Highways (Traffic & road safety)

    Tree section

    Resulting in:

Interim safety bollard installed at junction of Hornsey Lane & Stanhope Road (not pretty but effective - my campaign slogan!)

Trees planted in Hornsey Lane Gardens

Reduction of excess double yellow lining in the Miltons area

Ensuring some parking retained along Hornsey Lane

    Potholes fixed

    Street cleansing improvements

Replacement of gas services being carried out more efficiently and conveniently for residents

    Dormant street works kick-started

Action on delayed water leak repairs

    On Crime:

The reduction in crime, particularly burglaries and theft, is crucial in our community and is one of my top priorities.

As a leading member of the Neighbourhood Watch movement in Haringey, I have established strong links with the Police and I have a realistic understanding of crime in Highgate.

I chair regular meetings of Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators in Highgate and also chair meetings of the Borough Association of Neighbourhood Watches. Through these roles and by working with other local people I was able to help ensure that our Highgate Permanent Beat Manager was issued with a bike and training and I will continue to campaign for greater police resources for Highgate.

    Pirate radio:

I was instrumental in ridding the area of pirate radio broadcasts from the rooftops of Northwood Hall, these pirate transmitters were usually installed in such a way as to create permanent property damage and through blocked chimneys and vents physical dangers to residents.

    On Local Democracy:

Local governance should be about local issues & looking after the people in our community. I have been a vigilant, regular and active participant in the local Area Assemblies since their inception and have made numerous suggestions that have been taken up by the Council. Not least that sessions labelled as You talk, we listen, are just that, and not We talk, you listen!

    On local business:

Our local shops are essential, particularly for the less able bodied and those without cars. They perform a vital caring role in our community.

We must do all we can to support our small independent shopkeepers, who are struggling to compete with the large chains. Councils must reduce their business rates if small shops are to survive.

During the last two years since the last election nothing has been achieved for shopkeepers on the Archway Road, nor has anything meaningful been achieved in Highgate Village, which still remains divided between two boroughs.

Haringey Councils 'snails pace culture must be forced to change!

    Current areas of activity include:

Ensuring that CCTV is properly used to cut theft & vandalism in local shopping areas rather than penalising local motorists for further town hall profit.

Campaigning for Hornsey Town Hall Car Park to be opened to the public now to the benefit of residents shoppers and businesses within Crouch End.

Haringey's strategy of the "Greenest Borough" includes a programme of replacing street lighting - but the option chosen for Highgate is the cheapest - ignoring Highgate's status as a conservation area - it was the attempt to impose these sub-standard items of street furniture some 14 years ago that brought me into active campaigning - I won the battle then in Hornsey Lane Gardens and the Miltons, I have been fighting since then on many other areas of concern, and I shall continue to fight on this same and many other issues now. Unlike some local politicians I don't just appear at election time or consider that membership of a team (that is a political party) is my primary concern.

    My primary concern is you!

I am a regular correspondent in the local press, regularly raising issues and challenging the Council whenever necessary.

Blurbs

About me:

.. I have been a committed Highgate resident for more than 30 years. I have run my business and, with my wife, have raised my family here. Both our children attended local state schools and have gone on to university and the world of work. My wife is a Deputy Head in a London Primary School and I was a secondary school governor for many years.

I have been active in the Highgate community for the past 14 years and many local people already know that I have been working hard, quietly getting things done.

Who I'd like to meet:

Ideally I'd like to meet every voter in Highgate Ward individually - but I know that is impossible. I know many of you as a result of the campaigning work that I have done over the years, and you know that I have the best interests of our community at heart. I shall try to speak to as many of you as I can but you can contact me here and be assured of a prompt reply.

The next few weeks are going to be hectic but with your support I believe we can put an independent voice for Highgate on the council.

Why an independent voice?

Labour have treated Haringey as their personal fiefdom for the last 40 years and it shows - decisions are not taken by councillors but by an inner cabal - a kitchen cabinet, who decide how their party will run our borough. Over the years they have wasted collossal sums on schemes that have not given value to you or me - the council tax payers of this borough. The Conservatives? Few of you will remember but when Haringey was first created back in 1964 as a result of the amalgamation of Hornsey, Wood Green and Tottenham, they ran the borough - was it any different then? - I doubt it.

Local politicians act in their own interest and many see it as a stepping stone to further their personal political ambitions. The newer force in Haringey are the Lib Dems - but if they gain control will they be any different? The evidence of Lib Dem control in the neighbouring boroughs of Islington and Camden suggests not.

It has been suggested to me by current Haringey politicians that there is no point in standing as even if I win I will be frozen out from Council business! I have a track record of dealing with Haringey's labour ruling party and politicians - but I have no political baggage - Labour cannot be seen to co-operate with a Lib Dem or Tory idea - but they know that without that political identity I already represent the best interests of local residents and that is genuinely my motive. As an independent councillor I will be able to work to represent the genuine interests of local residents - of you!

I believe a genuinely independent voice, without the fetters of party political allegiance, can make a difference - you have only one vote in this by-election - use that one to elect me and I will try my hardest to ensure that our political masters (as they secretly think they are) act in all of our best interests.

Vote Ralph Crisp on March 6th.
