Cllr Jonathan Bishop's Interests
|
| General | Information Technology has formed a big part of my life beyond childhood. I have developed a deep enthusiasm for the Internet and Online Communities, and have excelled in the IT industry developing the Circle of Friends social networking technology and the PARLE e-learning system. Most of my IT systems have been based around database technology, and my passion for using the technology has been influenced by the enthusiasm of my Database Theory lecture Rob Large and my subsequent MSc supervisor Dr. Ray Kingdon.
My successes in the later part of my academic career have been heavily influenced by Dr. Mike Reddy, a lecturer who supervised me throughout my studies into computing at the University of Glamorgan. | | Music | I generally listen to anything that catches my ear. I like Gary Newman's 'Cars' as it was released in the year I was born and shows how autistic people can be innovative and become leaders in their fields. I like Chanelle Hayes's 'I Want It' as it shows that even those who are not natural at something can achieve success if they are given the opportunity. | | Television | I like watching Formula 1 - I started supporting Lewis Hamilton before the beginning of the 2007 season when I heard his inspirational story of how he wanted to become a Formula 1 driver since a young age and achieved it, making me believe that I can achieve my childhood dream to get a doctorate, which I am now enrolled on. | | Books | An number of books have influenced my in my research and development of online communities. Deborah Hix's 1993 book 'Developing User Interfaces' put me on a good footing for developing Web-based system and Jenny Preece's 2000 book 'Online Communities' refined this work to give me a solid platform for developing online communities. If it were not for Amy Jo Kim's book, 'Community Building on the Web' I would not have the technical appreciate of online communities that she gave me through proposing the 'Membership Lifecyle' | | Heroes | Real - Keir Hardie. First leader of the Labour Party who as MP spoke out for the mining families of Pontypridd, despite the electoral consequences of doing so.
Imagined - Robin Hood. The binary oppositions of the legend have always appealed to me. |

Cllr Jonathan Bishop's Blurbs |
About me:
I was born on the 8th of November 1979 at East Glamorgan Hospital in Llantwit Fardre, Pontypridd and named Jonathan Edward Bishop. My middle name, Edward was taken from my grandfather Edward Bishop, who was part of the mining revolution in industrialised Rhondda, working at many mines in South Wales, including Ty Mawr. Edward Bishop joined Ty Mawr after the end of the Second World War and was there during its merger with Lewis Merthyr Colliery in 1958 before retiring in 1968 after a career in mining spanning five decades. Edward Bishop, or "Grampy Ted" as his grandchildren call him, has served as an inspiration to me demonstrating the importance of a strong work ethic and like his grandfather Ted, I have also found inspiration in my Rhondda-born father, who when faced with adversity that threatened my future on each occasion found a way through for the benefit of the whole family. I feel fortunate, not only to have a mother that takes on many of the adversities that I have faced, but one who has given me a family history of entrepreneurship, gallantry and statesmanship.

Who I'd like to meet:
I am delighted to have been elected as a Labour & Co-operative Town Councillor for Treforest. I have made it my mission to represent my community and change it for the better and gaining public office seems to me the best way to do it. As Treforest's only Labour councillor I will ensure that the village is lifted from the shadows of a community dogged by divisions into one proactive in progress, where Labour and co-operative values of equality, solidarity and respect are embedded into everyday practice.
Treforest may have lost its 'voice' when Tom Jones left, but I will speak up for all those in Treforest suffering injustice, whatever their problem and whatever the level of government responsible. I will continue to invest in new systems to improve my communication with voters and better answer their queries.
