Lauren Briel for Seattle City Council's Interests
GeneralUrban Design, community service, travel, spending time with friends, going to concerts, Mariner's Games, sailing, biking, skiing, kayaking, surfing, any Virginia Tech sport (GO HOKIES!), Americone Dream (ice cream in general). I rarely pass up a chance to go to a concert or a sporting event.
MusicEverything! Most days I stream KEXP all day at work but I really do listen to almost everything on a regular basis except country, although I know my fair share of those too (I can't deny singing Chattahoochee at the top of my lungs in the car). Our local music is incredibly diverse; there's a very good reason Seattle is known for its live music scene. Great acts, great energy, and great entertainment no matter what your favorite genre! (And I really do go to almost anything!) Before I started campaigning I went to an average of one live show a week - everything from Joe Gould's Secret to Velvet Revolver to the Long Winters to SuperDiamond: nothing beats a live show...especially if it is the Foo Fighters (who I see every chance I get) :)
MoviesThe rumors are true: I can recite Star Wars almost verbatim...the real original one, not the digitally-enhanced-extra-Jabba-scene one. In a more political sense I enjoy Dave (I tried to work in "we're walking, we're walking, we're walking, we're stopping" to all my tours in college) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (god help me if I look like Jimmy Stewart when this is all said and done). In a more everyday sense I prefer comedies to anything else but if you want specifics I will repeatedly watch: Animal House, Goonies, French and Italian flicks, SNL sketches turned feature-length film (yes, I have memorized Wayne's World also) and I love old classics - especially musicals. Don't pretend you can't sing along to the Sound of Music!
TelevisionI can't watch tv anymore because I don't really have time - before I became a candidate I used to spend the vast majority of my time watching things that most other people probably don't find that entertaining. On more than one occasion I actually did watch the Seattle Channel and CSPAN. Really. On a more mainstream note I enjoy The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, Soprano's, Arrested Development, Myth Busters, South Park and the Family Guy. I will always stop flipping the channels to watch a ski/snowboard/surf/skate movie (was addicted to RSN when I lived in Park City) and I really enjoy music videos. Thank god for YouTube. Has anyone else checked out Fuse?
BooksIn general I am better at buying books and having them in my "to read" pile than actually reading them - I think the library encourages reading just because it gives you a deadline. Currently I'm supposed to be reading whatever we're reading this month for Illiterati (the book club I am in). Perennial favorites include: The Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World, At Play in the Fields of the Lord, any Roald Dahl book, any and all Calvin and Hobbes or Far Side collections. I also like non-fiction books about personal finance and city development, which may be boring to some but I figure they are issues that actually impact my life so I should know about them :)
HeroesMy Grandmother, Jane Jacobs, Rachel Carson, Frederick Law Olmstead, HWS Cleveland, Amelia Earhart, Dave Grohl, parents - they have the toughest job that exists.

About me:

My Grandfather always taught me: "if you see a problem with the way things are going either do something to improve it or stay quiet.” ...I’m not a quiet person.

Seattle will be a safe and sustainable place to live with my leadership -- YOU can REALLY help me make a difference!!

How to Help:

1. Tell 10 Friends about me

2. Change your MySpace pic to my logo

3. Contribute $10 - we're running a bare bones campaign but still need to cover the costs of collateral http://www.votelaurenbriel.com/contribute.php

4. Volunteer with us!

Thank you!
Who I'd like to meet:

Some philosophy for your campaign:
"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: 'Mankind'. Basically, it's made up of two separate words - 'mank' and 'ind'. What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind."

Is it just me or does that picture remind anyone else of the old high school photo days? They just never turned out how we wanted them to.

So, what would you say to sway the vote of people who are, maybe, not your friends? Like me?

Fresh off the SLOG:
oh - and another thing - I noticed that Jean Godden's race just got a lot more interesting ... a number of people changed their minds about her seat at that forum. Who was that young woman running against her? All I can say is I was very surprised by the mood there.

I think you should borrow these policies from previous successful campaigns:
- Support slavery (Pres. Van Buren got elected on this)
- Promise a "return to smurfolocy" (it got Pres. Harding elected)
- Rule over Cuba (worked for Pres. McKinley)
- Get out of Vietnam (worked for Pres. Nixon -- then he started bombing Cambodia)
If you need more political advice, let me know.
