.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ....VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS.........Attack!.... .. I can see them coming over the hill... From the heart of Scotland... A shambling juggernaut... Angular alt-punk anti heroes... Lank and volumous... .. Humanity Has Never Beheld Such A Creature! .. Verbose and wailing vocals... Irrepressible drums... Bounding distorto bass... Throbbing cheese-wire geetar... .. Uttering Both Blessings And Woe. .. They speak in tongues... Of West Coast Hardcore (Punk), 80’s Brit Anarcho-punk and of New Wave... They whisper of The Dead Kennedys, of Rudimentary Peni, of The Misfits, of Born Against, of Bad Brains, of Devo and Captain Beefheart... And still they come! .. They Come For Your Wives... For Your Children... For You! .. The living dead are driven before them! They're drawing nearer now... Jerking... Beckoning with every convulsion... Who knows what otherworldly master they serve? .. VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS... .. Its Punk Rock, Jim - But not as we know it!!! .. .. .. .. .. .. ...... .. .. .. .. .. ......I don’t know why, but ..the monsters come to me....... ..Questioning… Huge, yawning mouth, dark and sage-eyed, asks in a bowel-loosening sonorous growl: What is it that we can’t go below? Are there eyes there staring back at us? From nothing, nothing comes. Yet our cosmos comes to be. So answer! What is the Ground of our being? .. Another: many-winged, lofty, sky-screaming: Why are we in our very essence directed beyond the world? Nothing fills us here. Give answer! What is the Final Purpose for which we live? .. Now, caught from behind! This one is variegated, shape-shifting; a thick clawed finger presses between each of my ribs, hot breath whispers on my goose-fleshed neck: Is CHOICE the ultimate layer of reality from which everything springs? Are we sub-creators? Sub-choosers? Respond! Who wills that we should BE? .. These fearful Servants of the Voice recede to the shadows, and now come crowding horrors both holy and hellish, me and my kind, roaring and howling: Why are we lost and afraid and raging? Why do we love and lust and hate and hope? Is there any blood to cover monstrosities like us? .. And then there’s just some Jew. He stands in our midst with no beauty to make us want anything to do with him. But when he speaks we are shaken to our depths. I AM. So he says. I am your Cause, I am your Purpose, I am the CHOICE that gives you creativity. I am the way home. I am the non-lie. I am the life. Come learn from me how to lose it to find it. I take all monsters into my school. He looks into us, loves us, touches our diseased flesh, and commands the elements for our safe conduct. He rips the devils right out of us with a word! We know the finger of God when we see it. .. Then his face crumples under our terrified, treacherous, tyrannical, hateful blows, mangled beyond identification, his flesh torn under our clawing, his hands and feet punctured by our fangs, into the wood of the erected torture instrument. He lies in a pool of his own blood. And the blood doesn’t stop flowing. The earth cracks open to swallow him. Closes again. Three days later the grave’s had enough. He is vomited up into our midst again, a second Jonah, this time wearing a vigorous bone-and-flesh glory-body! The blood comes up with him and he scatters it generously to all who thirst. He invites us into the death-mouth crack in the ground, where that old enemy is still choking on its demise—It’s the new way I purchased with my blood. Come through Me, children, and you’ll make it to My Father. .. This is my post-historicity after-myth. But did it actually happen? It’s all on record: proclaimed the crucified and risen Son of God only weeks after his criminal execution. Why? Where did this belief come from? Delusion, deceit, primitive superstition? (The monsters laugh menacingly at patently false hypotheses.) Or is it true? ‘X’ is the mystery. How will you fill in the blank? I believe in His resurrection. It is both rational and a matter of faith—both facing the evidence and trusting in the One who called me, rescued me, walks with me. His shocking grace makes children out of monsters, grows us into His new creatures. We humbly offer our songs, dear listener. Consider and beware! For I don’t know why, but the monsters come to me. And many of them are in His pay. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. !-replace General Table-! !-..myspace tutorials and code-! .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ...... ...... .. .. .. .. ...... ...... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. “Remember the last time you had zombie-fied fun at a show… You can re-live that zaniness with this crazy outfit that's long on fun and short on seriousness… The Packaging is quite complete, with lyrics and illustrations to guide on through the befitting and spastic storyline.” - HM Magazine (Doug Van Pelt) ...... “Now as a fan of Captain Scarlet (yeah I know sad innit haha!)... I had to wonder how this lot got their name but that will have to wait till another day... added to that the title of the disc I wondered what the hell this lot would sound like!... The Dead Kennedys... they sound like an updated version of the Kennedys and the vocalist has a voice that reminds me of Jello Biafra a lot, altho there are other influences in there I would say the DK's are the one that come across most strongly. Comes with a nice booklet as a sleeve that has lyrics etc in it... The lyrics are, for me, slightly weird but I really like the music... overall not a bad listen at all.” - Sean (Oi! Warning fanzine - UK) ...... “Lots going on here, maybe a bit too much for me to wrap my head around. Imagine NOMEANSNO-meets PRIMUS on 78 rpm and some seriously nerd-level gothic-horror / Lovecraft-esque lyrics, delivered with stream-of-consciousness zeal. A sample song title: "Something Breathes Beside You in the Darkness -or- Who Is the Light That Flashed on the All-Horrors Desolate Beach Bash?" Yep... Are these guys YES for the new millennium or just several weeks off their medication? I guess time will tell.” - CS (Maximum Rock and Roll) ...... “… this sci-fi/goth punk band from Glasgow offer up a wonderful mixture of driving guitars and drums and lyrics to make H.P.Lovecraft smile, short powerful songs make this album last only 25(ish) minutes but with the vocalist singing at 100mph they make up quantity with quality… the lyrics is where the fun starts even ignoring the message of the cross on the first page… However intelligent lyrics and the music style won't appeal to all and it reminds me of the experimental rock coming out of the states in the late 70's and I fear like that this album will become a curiosity/collectors item stuck on a shelf and not appreciated as it should be…” - Brian Bassingthwaighte (Detonation Zine) ...... “Otherworldly sci-fi punk outfit Voice of the Mysterons have transmitted their speedy and farcically titled release… for the rapturous enjoyment of your humanoid ears. You'll get some bang for your buck with this album, a whopping 18 tracks long, but don't expect anything other than grotty punk songs shorter than the time it takes to say their titles themselves… The band's sound bares obvious semblance to the Dead Kennedys mated with some gorey horror novel experiment-gone-weird. If you can imagine skanking to the Monster Mash as played by stupidly talented punks you must get this CD as a matter of utmost priority…” - (Thrive Magazine) ...... “… This album works for me, and I don't even feel I need to understand it. It takes punk to the cliffs of obscurantism at the border of internal cleansing or shambling... are they anti heroes or messiahs, at any angle it sounds like punk... Such self-absorption in these creatures! Vocals are verbose and full of demented lamentations... deconstructively delivered, and irrepressible in its formative devolution verging to a pulsating connection with utter desecration. That will be the blessings they also disturb. Like ones who fell to Earth, they walk the shoreline of US Western Hardcore Punk, with Anarcho-British New Wave overtones. Comparing them to the Dead Kennedy's alone is a big mistake. It is possibly a mistake to compare them with anyone, but if one does, they are also close to Bad Brains, Man or Astro-Man? and Primus ... or the Second Coming of Mowgli with Captain Beefheart...Otto does sound like Biafra, and the tempo at times is Kennedyesque. These are children harvesting sonic dividends and dissipating imagery: a golden punk masterpiece with the tension of hell - one electromagnetic sweet heartache for you!” - Carl Macki ..www.punkglobe.com.. ...... “My first thoughts about this album before even listening was … “Jeez shorten your name!”… However upon listening to the album, I kinda want to let everyone know about them. Bringing back the quirky, poppy, and funny elements the Dead Kennedys brought us years earlier, Voice Of The Mysterons spice it up a bit and turn it up a notch going for a slightly more heavy instrumental sound and a lighter vocal appearance. A great description of this band would be to say that this is a perfect mix of The Toy Dolls and Valient Thorr… do yourselves a favor and pick up this album.” - Noah W.K. ..www.jerseybeat.com.. ...... “… It is very rare to find an album that defies classification -"nothing new under the sun" as Solomon said. However, this band combines various musical and cultural influences, including cheesy sci-fi (refer to the band name), to create the most spastic and original punk I've heard in years. The music on this album is insane. There is not a single song that reaches three minutes in length and there is not a moment to catch your breath until the (comparatively) pretty one-minute closing secret track. It is super fast, low-fi punk with obvious electronic, hardcore, and indie influences. Otto sounds like a tortured combination of Jello Biafra and Jeff Suffering, ranting invariably verbose lyrics over the music… This guy sings faster than I can read… Otto packs a lot of insight into these lyrics… [and] does not write boring and derivative lyrics like so many CCM artists do, the lyrics throughout describe spirituality in a challenging and intelligent way. For example, the first song opens with a description of the creation of humanity: What Animus to animate us? See between the sequences. Feel the invisible hand shape the million minutiae while you move free within his breath (His breath within). This album is an excellent release, proving once again that punk is not dead, it's just mutating. If the world has any justice this will be on everyone's best of lists for the end of the year, unfortunately this band is just too experimental and unique to achieve any more than a cult following-but you should be part of that following. 4.5 out of 5.” - Noah Salo ..www.tollbooth.org.. ...... “Did you ever find yourself saying "I love Blaster the Rocket Boy, but they're just not weird enough"?... Punk fans, rejoice! Otto has relocated to the UK and put together the monstrous mutant known as Voice of the Mysterons, and though the listen is a challenge, great is our reward! Ah, but what does Voice of the Mysterons sound like, you ask? Put the Dead Kennedys, Jeff Suffering, C. S. Lewis and early Blenderhead in a blender and whip to a froth. Add surreal time shifts and a liberal dose of alien monstrosities and you have the recipe for the band's debut… Pummeling guitar and drums collide with a sweeping bassline to form a foundation for NoBot's distinct vocal attack. The result is a racing post-hardcore, sci-fi, apocalyptic wall of sound. I love it… The lyrics on "They Have Pulled Down Deep Heaven..." are challenging. References to the Bible and C. S. Lewis continue to abound… Voice of the Mysterons is an unparalleled treat. Possibly because no one else sounds like them. This post-hardcore nightmare vision couples harsh, shifting rhythms with melody, thought, and originality. "They Have Pulled Down Deep Heaven..." is familiar, yet shocking, like an old friend gone mad. I am left dazed and wanting more…” - Jim McDonald ..www.1340mag.com.. ...... “Sometimes when you wish for something a little off the beaten path, you get it in spades. Case in point: this disc: Imagine that Biafra and Saccharine Trust’s Jack Brewer had a love child and he’d been recruited to sing in a Scratch Acid cover band wholly conceived in the mind of the dudes in Rudimentary Peni and you ain’t even partly there. This is unrelentingly noisy, pretty danged original sounding, and fucked up in all the right ways. Can’t wait to spring it on the guests at my next garden soiree.” - Jimmy Alvarado ..www.razorcake.org.. ...... “First thing that hit me about this band was the singer’s vocal resemblance to Jello Biafra, which is not at all a bad thing. They don’t hanker to be a retro-punk act, but instead lunge forward with terse auditory muggings and arcane lyrics holding onto endless rhythmic kicks, twists, and spasms. If you ever listened to Rudimentary Peni’s later output you’ll have a foundation for the apocryphal wordplay, then add a little dab of Nomeansno and a heaping glob of grandiose cosmology mixed with biblical mythology to top it off. Possibly one of the only overtly Christian bands that I actually like, owing largely to their eccentricity, Voice of the Mysterons could be singing about Zeus and Thor engaging in epicurean depravity with robotic elves coated in druid fluids and I’d be equally interested. The disc has a vaguely cinematic feel to it that would fit with a Guillermo Del Toro film. Strangely, the songs come off playfully theological, leaving me to wonder if it is somewhat lighthearted or faithfully ostentatious. This album may be too musically and conceptually obtuse for the casual rock’n’roll fan, but I’m keeping it around because of its structural integrity and creative lyrical whimsy that evinces an archaic stream of consciousness.” - Ben ..www.rocknrollpurgatory.com.. ...... “… [VOTM are for] lack of a better description, sort of a plodding and sometimes bombastic art-punk sound. The lead singer’s voice sounds like a cross between PIL-era Johnny Rotten and Jello. These guys have some pretty off the wall song titles, too, like “Electrocutesy vs. the Shocking Alternative”, but then again I guess they go along quite well with the esoteric music they try to describe. The Mysterons… [are not] something I’d find myself listing to a whole lot personally, but… without a doubt get points for bringing something a little different to the table.” - CS (Ear Damage Zine) .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. !-END block to replace General Table-! .. ..
