Michele Josia
Michele Josia was born in 1974 in Rome. He studied composition and choir conducting with the following professors: E. Mealli (the Conservatory Rossini in Pesaro), F. Barchi (the Conservatory Perosi in Campobasso) and I. Florjanc (the Music Academy in Ljubljana). He took his master’s degree in choir conducting at the Conservatory of Music “L. Refice” in Frosinone, Italy.
Throughout his music career he has broadened his conducting knowledge with the following professors: F.Barchi, G.Graden, C.Hogset, S.Kuret, U.Lah and P.Hanke.
He has always been a film fan therefore he has composed several soundtracks for short films and documentaries for the RAI and presented his work at different national and international festivals in Italy and abroad.
His choral compositions are performed by Italian and foreign choirs and his work has been published and recorded by publishers Pizzicato (Udine), Errefe (Rome) and Nasi Zbori (Slovenian choral magazine).
His career as a choir conductor started with the choir Musicanova in Rome, where he worked as assistant conductor for several years. They held numerous concerts and entered many competitions in Italy and abroad (Gorizia, Vallecorsa, Maribor, Tours). While being with Musicanova he also participated in the making of soundtracks of E. Morricone and M. Frisina for the following films: Vatel , Padre Pio, Giuseppe, Christus, Aida degli alberi, La piovra 10.
From 2003 to 2005 he was assistant conductor of the Tone Tomsic Academic Choir from Ljubljana, one of the most important mixed choirs in Europe.
Beside concerts they also participated in various projects and competitions such as: Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, Opera aria with the RTV Symphonic Orchestra, Nasa pesem Maribor, Let the People Sing 2005, International Choir Competition Seghizzi 2005.
Since 2005 he has been the conductor of Vox Carniolus, a mixed chamber choir from Jesenice. He succesfully conducted the choir on thematic concert Sozvocenja 2005. On a regional choir competition Skofja Loka 2006 choir Vox Carniolus won Gold prize with exellence, special prize for best mixed choir, he himself was specially awarded for best performance of Slovene folk song, best preformance of Slovene contemporary composition and for best selected programme. On Nasa pesem 2007, the national choir competition, he also achieved numerous prizes with the choir (listed in the above section). His latest achievement is the award for the best performance of compulsory contemporary Slovenian composition (pismo by Uros Krek) and overall 4th place on International Choir Competition in Maribor, april 2008.
The Vox Carniolus Chamber Choir was established in 1998 by its former conductor, Primoz Kerstanj. He invited several well-experienced male and female singers to form a choir that soon took over an important role in cultural life in Jesenice and its surroundings. Joint concerts with other choirs led Vox Carniolus to some interesting projects. The result of cooperating with Academic Choir France Preseren was »Misa Criolla & Navidad Nuestra«, a major project which was carried out in two forms: one was with domestic soloists and instrumentalists in Jesenice, Kranj and Radovljica, and the other with Argentinian musicians and Ariel Ramirez, the composer himself, in Vienna and Ljubljana.
The choir's persistent progress has been noticed at regional and inter-regional choir gatherings. In autumn 2004 the choir won its first gold prize at the regional competition in Skofja Loka.
At the beginning of 2005 the choir welcomed a new conductor, Michele Josia, whose conducting career in Slovenia started with The Tone Tomsic Academic Choir from Ljubljana, where he worked as assistant conductor.
The season 2004/2005 ended successfully with the visit of The Acantus mixed choir from Beveren, Belgium, with which they performed some joint concerts throughout Slovenia. In the season 2005/2006 some members from the Hozana mixed choir joined the choir, which has consequently grown stronger in the number of singers. The season has been marked by a successful performance at Sozvocenja 2005, joint concerts with Ljubljanski madrigalisti choir and the Krog Chamber choir from Ljubljana, the recording of a compact disc and a concert tour to Belgium.

On a regional choir competition in Skofja Loka in November 2006 the choir won Gold prize with excellence and special prize for best mixed choir. Furthermore, the conductor was awarded by three special prizes for: best performance of a Slovene folk song, best performance of Slovene contemporary composition and best selected programme.
After this, the decision came: a step further should be made. Which means the choir had to decide whether to participate at Nasa pesem 2007 (national choir competition). The singers were aware of the efforts they would have to invest but they did not hesitate very much. And the efforts have been greatly payed.
On the national choir competition Nasa pesem 2007 in Maribor the choir achieved the following prizes:
-3rd place of Nasa pesem 2007
-special prize of the jury for best performance of a Slovene folk song (Zrejlo je zito, arranged by Stojan Kuret)
-special prize of the jury for best performance of a contemporary Slovene composition (Christus est natus by Damijan Mocnik)
-special prize of the jury for the highest placed choir that participated at Nasa pesem for the first time
- special prize of Glasbena matica Ljubljana: the concert of a gold choir (this concert was held on January 20th 2008 in Slovenska filharmonija, Ljubljana).
By this success the choir has been placed among the best choirs in the country, which has also set some new challenges in front of the singers. One of them happened not long ago: on October 18th, the choir returned from Riva del Garda, Italy, where they participated in international competition. They sang in two categories, traditional and sacred music, and WON BOTH!

After this, the choir started to prepare for other concerts, from which the January gold choir concert was surely one of the most important ones.
Not long ago, the choir faced its greatest challenge so far: International Choir Competition in Maribor (18th - 20th April 2008). The singers, as well as the conductor, invested great efforts in the preparation for this event. The result is: 4th place (among 12 very good choirs!) and the Award for the best performance of compulsory contemporary Slovenian composition (Pismo by Uros Krek), which can already be heard on this page!
