| About Victor Murillo |
Through his South American roots and unique vision, Victor Murillo has created a sound that draws fans from his native Ecuador to Canada, across the United States and in Austin where he plays regular shows and private events. He has carefully crafted 5 albums and will soon finish a sixth, a fusion album that reflects the depth of his recent exploration in Middle Eastern music and jazz. A brief list of some of the instruments he has mastered: Guitar- classical and Latin jazz, Kenas – Andean notched bamboo flutes, Native American Flutes, Bansuri – transverse alto flute from India, South American stringed instruments including: charango, tiple, cuatro venezolano and mandolina, Zicus – panflutes including toyos taller than the average woman, literally. Raised in Ecuador, he started teaching himself guitar at the age of 10. By 14 he was playing for his high school ambassadors of music program in Quito. When he moved to Boston at 20, he quickly became known for his kena and charango playing, working with established talent such as Fortaleza, Guamari, Yarina, Flor de Cana. While touring with Guamary, he played with the Symphony of Portland Maine. From Boston he began touring with Fortaleza, gaining more performing experience. He then began teaching workshops and giving concerts at festivals, university halls, and theaters across the country and Canada. Victor moved to Texas in 2000 and dedicated himself to 4 years of classical music studies in San Antonio. While there, he was named winner of the Guitar Wars competition sponsored by Alamo Music. He pursued music tirelessly, worked with a latin jazz quartet Acoustic Dream, was sought after as a soloist, and founded Zurko, a fusion group that recorded four cd's. He performed regularly at the River Walk with Andean Fusion, a South American Ensemble. He continued to play shows and tour in the region, until in 2007 Disney invited him to present traditional Andean music in daily concerts at the Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL. Currently recording in Austin Texas, Victor has taken advantage of the area’s eclectic mix of world musicians to continue recording his most recent fusion album. He started to write and collaborate in 2007 in his hometown of Quito, Ecuador with talents such as Gino Castillo, Mauricio Vicencio, Mariela Condo, Stalin Gonzales and other acclaimed artists from the area. He hopes to finish it in early 2009. His influences range from Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia, Al D’ Meola, Inti Illimani, Pat Metheny, Enigma, and people he’s played with at Native American Pow Wows. His music seeks to mix cultures without losing their flavor. The result is a sound with rich roots, elegant melodies, and a growing fan base of people who cannot describe what they are hearing.
