[Note] Reference of our music can be traced back to composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Edgar Varese and Oliver Messiaen. Born in Greece, Xenakis worked as an engineer for Le Corbusier and participated in several construction projects between 1950 and 1958 before he devote himself entirely to music composition. In particular, the Philips Pavilion designed for the Brussels World Expo in 1958: Edgar Varese was invited to compose an 8-minutes electronic music entitled Poem Electronique in harmony with the unique exterior shell/interior spacing designed by Xenakis and lighting/projected images designed by Le Corbusier. The music was playback through an 11-channels surround sound system with 400 speakers array. To us, the whole event was exactly a “Multi-media Architectural Music Theatre”.
With music mentorship and encouragement from Messiaen, Xenakis successfully developed an innovative music system based on abstract mathematical and philosophical interpretation of his architectural concepts. Such approach provided significant influences for the development of computer music and electronic music later on. On this work, we use a variety of computer software for the realizing of these historical materials in order to search for the links among the arts and languages of architecture, theatre, contemporary music and computer programming.
