what's a small object?
The Collier Classification System defines it as: "...Very Small Objects can be found anywhere and everywhere. If you look on the ground in front of you or reach into your pocket right now, you will likely find at least one Very Small Object. Due to the ubiquity of Very Small Objects, it is easy to compile a large and interesting collection in a very short time. Remember, living things cannot be classified using this system, so please do not collect them..."

YES? then you've just discovered a very small object. very small objects (let's call them VSOs) are everywhere, and we're interested in what sorts of small objects are lurking around the city of topeka. the ones in your neighborhood will be different than the ones you might find in a zoo, a school locker, the grocery store parking lot, a construction site on wannamaker, the woods along the kansas river or the beach at shawnee lake.
on July 20 2007, the sabatini gallery will exhibit the master collection of very small objects which have already been sorted, documented and named using the collier classification system. but we want to make one of our own for the library and want you to help!
are you ready to be part of a community archiving project where what you find will get named, appear on Flickr for the world to see and possibly end up in your library's permanent art collection?
Armed with our field manuals (available starting June 1, 2007 at the Sabatini Gallery--it's free!) and Official Collier Classification Collecting Kit (purchase information listed below), we will collect objects from the Topeka Kansas Site [1]. Small groups of participants lead by a gallery staff member will conduct daily collecting trips on Library grounds in search of VSOs “inhabiting” this shared space we know and love (registration required). We will fully document our specimens (sketch, measure, scan, name, number), upload images onto TSCPL's Flickr page, and exhibit our research data in the Library Atrium where guests can watch the project unfold.
It is Collier’s goal for this project to extend beyond his direct control and place it into the hands of the Sabatini Gallery staff, volunteers and visitors. Once the collection process is complete, the most notable [2] objects will be assessed by gallery staff and accessioned into the Topeka and Shawnee County Library’s Permanent Collection.
This kit includes an instructional booklet (pictured at left) designed by the inventor of the system, along with other contents pictured below.

Who I'd like to meet: YOU! This a place for collectors to meet each other, share findings, talk about the project and maybe go hunting together!
