A gifted singer, songwriter and guitarist with a wide range of influences, Steve's songs are crafted with an appreciation for melody, harmonic structure and the innate poetry and rhythms of language.
Now based in Seattle, Steve grew up in Wisconsin where he learned from and absorbed many different styles of music. One of his earliest musical memories is hearing "Cool Water" by the Sons of the Pioneers during a family automobile trip. There was Motown, the Beatles, and the blues. There were also the ethnic sounds of his German heritage, such as polkas and waltzes, and the Broadway show tunes that his father (a semi-professional musician) sang at the family piano.
Steve studied piano as a kid and music theory in college. He cut his teeth as a performer in rock 'n roll bands, and says he's been interested in the craft of songwriting for about as long as he can remember. "My songs hang around the intersection of folk music, rock 'n roll and the blues, but you'll also hear traces of country and Tin Pan Alley. I think my music reflects the fact that I grew up in almost exactly the center of the country, and I was able to absorb things from every direction."
So good to see you the other night Steve! Thanks for making it out to enjoy a night with little 'ol us...keep in touch pretty please. You always have a great way of making us feel good when you're around.
No trips to Ann Arbor yet. Hopefully that'll materialize in the not too distant future, but nothing's in the works. Nothing is always in the works; that's the problem. We have to get nothing out of the works and maybe they'll amount to something. Else they'll have to dismount to something. Capiche?
