INTERVIEWER: "Now it's bob marley and the wailers. you write such a lot of material for the group. Are you commited to the group?"
BOB MARLEY: "Well Yes. The group is the Wailers. Well fi some reason them seh Bob marley and the wailers. I never tell anyone fi seh dat, from no time at all. But maybe fi some reason why dem do it, you know? Well I man is a Wailers. An ah just soh it rest. Right now i and i ah goh play some music and just gwan play some music until then. Until wah fi happen well just happen. because I andI don't plan life. because when man plan, Jah wipe out."
INTERVIEWER: "A lot of people have a hard time understanding reggae, some people say it's a way of life; some people say, um, a dance, you know, and sometimes .....Now youre responsible for bringing reggae out into this world. As far as you are concerned, really, what is reggae?
BOB MARLEY: "Reggae is a vehicle that is used to translate a message of redemption to the people upon the earth today, we use it for that. You have a next man that use it just for dance, you know. but we use it for convey a message. because I don't see no other music can carry the message as good as it. Is like a heavy duty machine, you know. so is that we use it for."
The Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. In England alone, they’ve notched up over twenty chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries. The Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition, the Wailers have completed innumerable other tours, playing to an estimated 24 million people across the globe. They have also been the first reggae band to tour new territories on many occasions, including Africa and the Far East.
