Community Service with the YRs
As part of this year’s community service initiative, the Wake County YRs pitched in to help the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities with its annual fundraising event, the Toast to the Triangle. This year’s event featured over 40 local restaurants, a Bailey’s jewelry raffle, and honorary chair Kristi Yamaguchi. It was a great success – over 1,350 people attended the event, which raised over $170,000 for the Tammy Lynn Center. Many, many thanks to the club members who volunteered at the event. Your efforts helped immensely. Everyone who participated represented the Wake YRs with gusto and class. Let’s keep up the community service momentum!

The Wake County Young Republicans kicked off tailgate season in style this week at their Low Country Boil sponsored by Representative Bill Daughtridge. Over 100 people, including many Republican elected officials and three Republican Raleigh City Council Candidates, were in attendance for this festive event held at the West sales center in downtown Raleigh.
The event was the Young Republican’s summer social and highlighted the recent National Award the Wake County Young Republicans received for Young Republican Event of the Year. The award was for the creation of the GOP Tailgate Contest which encourages Republicans to show their support for Republican candidates by hosting Republican-themed tailgate parties at sporting events and music concerts from now until February. The contest will start up again this weekend and will be expanded nationwide with a grand prize of $500 to the top tailgater. The contest’s myspace page (www.myspace.com/goptailgatecontest) was launched last weekend and has already received a lot of traffic and buzz among political gurus.

NC Representative Bill Daughtridge (R-Nash) was announced as the winner of the GOP Tailgate Contest by The NCFYRs on Friday. The contest encouraged Republicans of all ages throughout North Carolina to show their support for the GOP’s candidates by hosting Republican-themed tailgate parties at sporting events and music concerts that had over 100 spectators.
Representative Daughtridge, who is a Candidate for NC Treasurer and also President of Daughtridge Gas & Oil Company of Rocky Mount and Daughtridge Gas Company in Greenville and Roanoke Rapids, won the contest with a tailgate photo at the 16th annual Rollin’ on the River party in Rocky Mount, NC. Daughtridge said “We were pleased to participate as we helped register voters at our event and encouraged them to become involved in the political process.” Among those featured in the picture are family and friends of Representative Bill Daughtridge, Representative Fred Steen (Rowan), Rocky Mount Mayor Elect David Combs, Elvis and of course – the Pink Cadillac.
After the contest’s second year in North Carolina and a 2008 election that is capturing everyone’s attention, the GOP Tailgate Contest is projected to expand nationwide later this year. While the contest received more than a handful of out-of-state tailgate pictures, only those that were taken by North Carolina registered Republicans were eligible for the contest’s prizes.
Josh Shriner of Wake County finished 2nd place with a picture taken September 15 at the NC State vs. Wofford football game at Carter Finley Stadium. Courtney Bass of Wake County won third place with a tailgate picture taken in Raleigh at the NC State vs. University of North Carolina football game on November 10.
