WAKING VISION
Waking Vision began naturally through 3 musicians meeting in the North East of the United States in 1999. Their first recording "The Ancient Bloom" was released in 2000 under then band name 'Waking Vision Trio' independently and received much attention from music fans and keen music critics and professionals. "...it is so rare for a young jazz band to arrive with a seemingly fully-formed style, one which emphasizes improvisational interplay as an integral part of their compositional approach, one that embraces communication and musical empathy at the very highest levels." - Phil DiPietro, All About Jazz. After a decent amount of live shows, a few tours, and a rapidly increasing following, guitarist John Shannon put the band's momentum on hold to develop "other areas of musicality and living," which sent all involved into other unique musical projects for the next few years. In 2004 Shannon brought the band back together to record the "High Selva Ep" under the simplified name Waking Vision and test out a different dimension of what was becoming known as 'waking vision music'. This took the band deeper into the exploration of sound and energy as a means for inspiration in the improvisational pursuit. Years of touring and concerts followed this sophomore independent release bringing back and expanding the fan base that originally began with the release of "The Ancient Bloom." In 2007 as more music was being written by Shannon, a new album entitled " of the Waking Vision' was born. This album took the band into a period of pursuing a state of beauty in relation to what was learned about sound and energy in the "High Selva" years. In speaking of the most recent Waking Vision album Shannon said, "Of the Waking Vision' is a musical piece committed to the beauty of mysticism itself and an honoring of the source of where all this Waking Vision music comes from." Shannon tends to elude to the idea that the songs come from somewhere else, another place beyond him.
Next up for Waking Vision is a release of new material with record label ObliqSound sometime in 2010. One thing that is evident in this timeline of Waking Vision recordings and history is that there will always exists a commitment to musical evolution bringing with it the promise that the next album will be an extension of the last one, not in just a natural timeline way but in a way that is conscious and considering all that was learned from past experience exploring the music. To leave it in the perspective of Shannon:
"Waking Vision is a main teacher in my life. It offers a musical doorway to peace, an experience of true inspiration, a connection to the Earth, and somehow an all encompassing song."
