Biography
In May of 2005, Conor Freeborn (Drums) met Wallix's former guitarist and lead vocalist, Serge Larocque at a small party. They decided to jam for a bit and realized how much they had in common musically and personally. After a while, they re-connected to jam this time including former bassist, Andrew Gagnon. They seemed to make decent music together and decided to form a band called "Self-Appointed". After a while Serge suggested that the band was missing something and recruited René Desaulniers (a friend from summer school) as lead guitarist and backup vocalist. Before all four of them could jam together Andrew left the band due to lack of commitment. It was around this time when Self-Appointed changed their name to "Wallix". Since Conor had not yet met René in person, they all arranged a practice. Meanwhile, Serge had re-connected with an old friend of his, Daniel Cyr, who plays bass. Just for fun, Serge invited him to the scheduled practice at Conor's house. Conor approved of Serge's decision to have René as lead guitarist and backup vocalist and when they all jammed together they decided that Dan was the perfect fit for Wallix's bassist. The band grew to love one another very deeply in a platonic and familial way. Unfortunately due to artistic differences and not enough time for the band Serge Larocque, the one who brought them all together, was sadly appointed to leave the band and he is missed very greatly. Wallix went on as 3 - piece (Conor, René and Dan) and began discovering a less grungy and more original experimental sound. René and Conor were heavily influenced by the whole late 80's early 90's grunge scene involving bands such as Nirvana, The Melvins, Mud honey, Soundgarden, Blind Melon, The Pixies, etc. as well as the classic punk rock such as the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, etc. They also were both very amazed by the ways of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and basically anything else played on Chez 106. There are very few modern bands that they listen to but some of them are: The Dresden Dolls, Malady, The Vines, The Flatliners, The Distillers and of course the underground scene in Ottawa involving bands such as Finkelstein Shit Kids, Mad Kid Disease, The Sewer Rats, Nemesis, etc. Dan was mostly influenced by bands such as Iron Maiden, Korn, and Lamb of God. All combined they produced an intense raw live sound. They were just missing one last aspect which turned out to be one of Conor’s close friends Nat LeBlanc. Nat had always been intrigued by the music of Wallix and for some time he had wanted to join the band as a second guitarist. When Nat had been informed of Serge’s retirement from the band, he finally confronted Conor telling him that he would like to replace Serge. At first, Conor was surprised and doubted that this would ever happen because the rest of the band were barely familiar with Nat. The next day Conor called up Nat and offered for just the two of them to get together at Conor’s house and jam. Nat displayed his ideas to Conor and they realized how well their music clashed together. Nat’s artistic talent was heavily influenced by the current indie scene and some classic bands like McLusky, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Wolf Parade, The Postal Service, Wolfmother, Wintersleep, Explosions in the Sky, and more. The next day Wallix had a band practice and Conor introduced Nat to the rest of the band. That very day they wrote their very first song involving Nat, called “Gavina Screams”, and he was welcomed into the band. The combination of Nat Leblanc, Conor Freeborn, Daniel Cyr, and René Desaulniers has created what is known today as none other than Wallix.
