He is a member and one of the founders of the highly acclaimed Banda Mantiqueira. This amazing Brazilian ensemble has won two Grammy nominations in the past, and has recently won the Tim Award as the best musical group category in 2006.
Walmir Gil has recorded, performed and travel across the globe, with the best known Brazilian artists and Bands, including Caetano Veloso, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Djavan, Gal Costa, Roberto Carlos, Rita Lee, Angela Maria, Cauby Paixoto, Jota Quest, Guinga, Chico Cesar. He is one of the most in demand recording artists in Brazil at this moment, has participated in important internatinal festivals as Rio and São Paulo Free Jazz Festival and Monreux Jazz Festival.
Walmir gil started playing the trumpet for the Musical Band Ensemble Lira Musical Pedro Salgado with incentive of his grandfather conductor Sebastião Gil, who was his great mentor and supporter since age of 10. Because of his brilliant talent he joind other Big Bands which led to his recognition among major high caliber, experienced musicians. He joined Maestro Branco’s Band who used to perform at the famous “Ópera Cabaré. . He was also a member of the 150 Night Club Band that performed at the luxurious Maksoud Paza Hotel. His experience allowed him to come in contact an play with several international musicians such as Joe Williams, Benny Carter, Anita O’Day, Paquito D’Rivera, Natalie Cole, Al Jarreau, Barry White, Bobby Sort, The Temptations, Yafa Yarkoni, Bobby Burns,one of the original and still member of The Earth Wind and Fire Band, among others.

Bacharel em trompete pela Mozarteum Paulista, WALMIR GIL começou a tocar trompa, aos 10 anos de idade, na banda de música Lira Musical Pedro Salgado, em São Paulo, da qual era regente o seu avô Capitão PM Sebastião Gil. Na mesma banda, mudou de instrumento e passou para o trompete. Percorreu o caminho que a grande maioria dos músicos percorre: tocando em bailes, casas noturnas e acompanhando artistas.
É um dos mais notáveis trompetistas brasileiros.Integrou bandas de consagrados artistas, entre eles a da cantora Ângela Maria, Djavan, Guinga, Gal Costa, César Camargo Mariano, Simone, Fafá de Belém, etc. E também acompanhou artistas internacionais como Anita O’Day, Bobby Short, Natalie Cole, Sadao Watanabe, Benny Carter,entre outros.
Participa muito freqüentemente de gravações em estúdios.
