Walter began drawing at an early age and always considered a life
in art. After a year of college in Texas, he left his southern roots
and began his first serious study with portrait artist Bob
Gerbracht in San Jose, California. Later he returned to college,
receiving a BA in Art from San Jose State University. While there,
he had the good fortune to study with Maynard Stewart, who had been
a student of
Frank Vincent Dumond at the Art
Students League of New York. Upon graduation, Walter moved to
New York and began studying at the Art Students League. For 10 years
Walter studied with Frank Mason,
who had also studied with Dumond and succeeded him in his classes
at the League.
Walter has lived in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY since
1989.
Gallery affiliations currently include Owl
57, Woodmere, NY and The
Art Gallery, in Stowe, Vermont
"I feel a love for nature and am drawn to
beauty. I';m striving to capture the essential truth and beauty
of my subject whether it is a landscape, a bouquet of flowers, or
a model posing, while taking consideration of composition, design
and paint quality - to create a work of art.
I started drawing when I was three years old and I've been
fortunate to study with many great artists including Bob Gerbracht
and Maynard Stewart in California and most notably Frank Mason at
the Art Students League of New York. I am very proud to be
associated with the Art Students League, one of the great art institutions
of the world.
I am influenced by many great painters of the Renaissance to the
19th century and to the present from whom I find a wellspring of
inspiration. I am fascinated with the qualities inherent in the
paintings of Velasquez and Sargent (and my teacher) where much is
expressed with seemingly little effort (seemingly being the key
word) and a sense of assuredness and bravura"
Walter, It was nice chatting with you tonight. I checked out your website. Great paintings! I really like your work. I'm gonna try and go out to the Williamsburg Salon to check out your show. See ya soon. - noah
