Just checking in, and giving you an update on where I stand with the recording of my debut record.
We have recorded all of the instrumental tracks, and most of the vocals. I was lucky enough to collaborate with a group of amazing musicians, and things are starting to sound awesome!!!
I hope to have all of the recording complete by mid March; leaving mixing, mastering and duplication to be done.
If all goes well, the record should be released sometime in April.

THE fusion flame was alive and flourishing in trumpeter MICHAEL MATSON's opening set at east village coffee lounge last friday. What kind of fusion, one might ask, since jazz has been fusing in all kinds of directions in the last few decades? For Matson, the answer is: whatever musical connection appeals to him at any given moment.
This time out,MATSON whose stellar career encompasses a sequence of musical partnerships reaching from Blue note swing orchestra and Roy Hargrove to lincoln jazz center, was working with a trio of frequent partners:tenor saxophonist BEN HEROD ,bassist ZACH WESTFALL and drummer NATE MOYA. It has become eminently apparent that YU NAGAI is the most consistently scintillating and inspiring guitarist force in the genre. The multi-talented nominee brings a muscular yet lyrical eloquence to everything he lends his artistry, always delivering galvanizing and forceful work, digging deeper into improvising while bringing a crackling vibrancy to his performances. YU's music is roll up your sleeves, in your face, hard bop blowing of rippling melodic song. His playing is different, edgier, more thought provoking that the usual jazz fare..he gives more
Most of the music was from MATSON's latest improvised fusion of funk and modern ideas, a collection of material that aptly combines the jazz, blues, funk, rock and groove aspects that are essential to his style. The resulting high-voltage performance offered a virtually nonstop stream of music, all of it state-of-the-art contemporary electric jazz.
