HOVER LOG 08
Flying in 08 is Great !!!!!
So.... I still spend more time flying then on the net. I'm sorry it's been so long since my last log report so I will bundle some of my trips into one here...
First things first! I decided to strip the hovercraft so now it's down to the bare bones. Just gauges and the chart plotter gps and the basic coast guard stuff, but the plasma screen had to go along with things like the remote spot light ( I tried night driving and in a hovercraft I don't think it's a good idea). I still have running lights though. I took about 130lbs off but I don't think it was worth it. But, I had to find out. I think most of my weight is in the water soaked wood hull but you know what? I'm still fly'n and cruise speed at 35 mph, top speed about 48mph. The best thing I've done so far is the skirt upgrade. I've had nothing but problems with my 18oz skirts of all different types. I think I've been through 4 skirts in 3 years and my last one I went to a 44oz material. It so far is the best thing that has happened. I asked a lot of people about this before and they said it's too heavy, wouldn't form out right, not flexible enough - just not done on a small craft. Well I'm here to tell you it's the best thing I ever did to the hovercraft and on top of that I have another 44oz wear strip on the contact line around the hovercraft. It's a dream skirt! I've had no problems and if you know me I'm out 5-7 times a month in the winter and out alot more in the summer. So I recommend a heavy skirt if you use your craft as a true hovercraft spending equal amount of time land and water. Also my maneuverability is a lot better. I'm able to drive like a car down the road. So, my last few trips have been great. I still have little problems here and there like back in Jan 08 when I had a trip where I lost steering. It woke me up to the bigger picture on the rust concerns. Since my pivot point rusted away it took my dock lines tied to both sides of the steering to get back, but we did it. After that I pulled it to the shop for a weekend and did a huge overall maintenance on it.
My latest trip was just last Sunday where 3 of us and a dog did a 80 mile cruise around Whidbey Islands Pass and down to Couplville. The Cabin is fully enclosed and heated and the seats are still nice marine seats so comfort is an A+. I did a lot of beach driving and a lot of driving up the boat ramps everywhere just having fun. Since no one is around in the winter I have all these places to myself. I put about 45-100 mile each time I go out. So far in the winter I go out every Sunday "when the weather is good," everything up to white caps.... goes. I'm in the design stages of my next craft due to my learning lessons of my current uh17t. I'm a lot older now and I just can't make this hovercraft do what I want. Here in the northwest it's a lot of ocean for a little 18' hovercraft so I'm starting with a size increase to about 36' powered by a cummins diesel and all hydraulic drive, big cabin with a head, and comforts that I wanted in my current craft that I just can't do. But at least the queen size air mattress fits in my current craft. So in closing I'm still here, but with working 10 hours a day Mon-Fri and having a family I spend my free time out on the hovercraft cruising. I'll try to keep up my log a little better.....
Thank you,
Jeff Rossi
