Raised in the infamous streets of South Central Los Angeles, Tony Williams aka AlkaTone Tha Warlord earned the nickname “Dizzy” for his head spinning rap style and tenacious efforts to force his many siblings to test his skills. His family and friends encouraged him to take that skill to the streets and use that same energy to defeat local talent in his neighborhood. In 1998 Warlord took their advice and entered the Watts Summer Festival Freestyle contest sponsored by LA’s top hiphop station 92.3 the BEAT and demolished 16 MC’s in front of a crowd of at least 500 including area rap notables Snoop Dogg and Rappin’ 4Tay. The prize was $2000, money that he never received; however what he gained from his relentless performance was something far greater….his name. By the end of the final round the crowd was chanting “Warlord”, crowning him the undisputed battle champion. He did finally receive a plaque the following year with his name misspelled, a small price to pay for the local celebrity gained and motivation to continue perfecting his craft. After graduating and leaving home at the age of 18, Warlord decided to take his rap game to Memphis, TN with relatives from his mother’s side using the money his family saved for his college enrollment to record, expand his talent and increase his fan base in other cities. Its no surprise that Warlord’s admits legendary music moguls like Ice Cube, Jay Z and Scarface influenced his passion for this industry; alongside his love for music lies a businessman whom at the age of 21 opened The Shack, a Cajun restaurant located on Jefferson Blvd in Los Angeles, CA. Whenever he returned home from performing and recording, Warlord would work in his cousin’s restaurant in Englewood to earn extra cash to substantiate his career fund. The same cousin who helped him build the success of the The Shack became the sole contributor to its demise by embezzling funds to the point of closure. This major loss pushed Warlord back to square one and increased his hunger pains for success in the music industry. His frustration began to take shape in his music and Warlord began to openly express an interest in join the Death row Camp. Soon thereafter, Warlord had a chance meeting with an acquaintance that after listening to his music immediately introduced Warlord to Big Los McCullers, then VP of Death Row and founder of LastOneStanding Ent. Big Los took an immediate liking to Warlord’s style and began assisting him in the development of the first volume of his critically acclaimed mixtape “Knock Your Block Off”. Although the first mix tape was seemingly associated with the Death Row name, no contract was ever signed between the label and the artist nor was any of the material recorded in Death Row Studios. However, Suge Knight did acknowledge Warlord as the next emerging talent on the West Coast but was not in the position at the time to take advantage of his talent.
