What is "War on Apathy"?

What is the WoA Mission?

War on Apathy creates interaction, growth and movement within and beyond the CURVE community on behalf of nonprofit organizations in need of acknowledgement and support. We help those who devote their time to defeating the many faces of suffering in our community and the world we live in. We hope to evoke awareness and empathy.

What is War on Apathy?

War on Apathy (WoA) is an umbrella campaign dedicated to the collective need for help by a huge portion of our world, rather than focusing on any one cause individually. We draw on the power of the people and the results of creative, positive action. WoA is a wake-up call that directs the viewers attention directly to the blunt existence of universal suffering and the nonprofit organizations that combat its causes on a regular basis. WoA is an innovative, interactive campaign. We offer a wide variety of ways in which people can become involved with the campaign and the movement. We invite all nonprofit organizations in need of help to submit a request to participate in WoA.

Elements of WoA:

· A media campaign for nonprofit organizations under one united umbrella designed to brand the act of giving and caring. Like the thirst for a cold beer, the desire to consume a cause depends on branding.

· A series of live and interactive events for the financial benefit of specific causes. Check back here for WoA event listings, which will include:

o Concerts
o Tours
o Parties
o Art and photography exhibits
o Talent performances (all genres)
o Fashion Shows
o Sporting events
o Poetry readings
o Short story, photo and poetry contests
o Your idea! Email bambi@curvemag.com with your event proposal.

· An interactive community. WoA brings a multifaceted, diverse community together for a common cause: to provoke thought and empathy while showcasing your talent and enthusiasm and connecting you with your community.

· A community on the move. WoA plans to extend beyond CURVE and the LGBT community, eventually making its way into the mass market.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who does WoA benefit and how?

War on Apathy benefits WoA-registered nonprofit organizations with free advertising and media exposure. Starting with the myspace.com/curvemagazine page, CURVE will feature artwork submitted by or on behalf of many different nonprofit organizations in need of a voice. There will also be ongoing coverage of the campaign on the curvemag.com/waronapathy page. This coverage will include organization-supplied artwork and a link on both the above sites. Participation extends into a print campaign in CURVE magazine. Media partnerships will also lead to more multimedia coverage. CURVE, Doria Roberts, partners and co-sponsors will grant registered nonprofit organizations free usage of the branded War on Apathy logo, text and photo bank for use in other markets. Media coverage of community-created War on Apathy events will play a huge role in the campaign. Participation will be awarded to nonprofit organizations based on need, space availability and target relevance. WoA provides an image, concept and community for your cause: a brand to enhance the effectiveness of the advertised messages of participating nonprofit organizations.

I represent a nonprofit organization. How do I register for the WoA campaign?

E-mail bambi@curvemag.com AND amanda@curvemag.com to become part of the WoA registry. We welcome nonprofit organizations of all types to submit a request for participation. We offer different levels of participation that are awarded based on need, space availability and target relevance. Please tell us about your organization and also let us know if you would like assistance with photography, artwork, venue or exhibition space, or talent for WoA campaign participation.

How is Doria Roberts involved with the WoA campaign?

Doria Roberts is the official international spokesperson of WoA.

Doria Roberts has released and self-produced five nationally distributed records on her imprint Hurricane Doria Records, has appeared at the internationally acclaimed Montreux Jazz Festival, and has headlined Gay Pride events in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Stockholm, and Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. She has also opened for or shared the stage with legendary folk singer Odetta, Janis Ian, Indigo Girls, John Mayer, blues legends the Holmes Brothers, Chris Smither, avant-garde R&B priestess Meshell Ndegeocello, world music darling Angelique Kidjo, the late poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker, and many others.
In 2004, Roberts was awarded both the Anderson Leadership Prize from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Orfeo Musica Humanitarian Award from the Tupilak Arts Consortium-Nordic in Stockholm, Sweden. Both awards were given in recognition of her willingness to fuse her music with her activist work and for creating major performance opportunities and outlets for other independent artists and youth at risk. Currently, she is the sole producer of the 10-year-old Queerstock Festival & Tour, the Black Eyed Susans Tribute Series and various other fundraising and awareness events. Roberts was also recently tapped to sit on the Composition/Songwriting Grammy Nomination Committee in November 2005 for the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).
This year, Roberts finished recording her sixth release after a five-week, breakneck recording schedule. Her new CD Under & Over is due out this fall and was recorded at the venerable Treesound Studios (which have hosted Elton John, Outkast, Indigo Girls, Collective Soul and Usher) in Atlanta. On this major indie effort, Roberts once again effortlessly and seamlessly melds her diverse musical heritage into a solid set of provocative musings on life and love and everything that happens in between.
For more information on Doria Roberts, please visit her official Web site, doriaroberts.com, or find more about her involvement at myspace.com/doriaroberts.

How do I declare War on Apathy?

CURVE, Doria Roberts, co-sponsors and partners declare War on Apathy: a battle against widespread reluctance to acknowledge the basic needs of the world's populations. We fight this reluctance with advertising. WoA will brand separate needs together as a common voice asking people to help somebody, anybody, who is in need. The campaign is ongoing and will be a constant source of recollection and awareness that there is much help needed.

You can declare War on Apathy, too. Consume this cause by clicking here! You will receive biweekly updates on the War on Apathy by signing up for the CURVE newsletter. But that isn't the only way you can help! Keep reading for details.

I am or represent talent (of any kind) and want to be involved with WoA. How can I go about that?

E-mail danie@curvemag.com and bambi@curvemag.com for more information.

I am a photographer/artist; how can I help with the WoA campaign?

There are many organizations in need of your help. You may submit work on behalf of a specific organization or genre of need to danie@curvemag.com and bambi@curvemag.com. While we can't pay you, you will receive photo credits for any work used. Your photos will become a part of the WoA photo bank, available for free usage by WoA-registered nonprofit organizations.

I own or run a venue or have exhibition space. How can I help with the War on Apathy?

If you are a venue or have exhibition space and wish to help with War on Apathy, contact Danie Belfield at danie@curvemag.com for details.

I represent a corporation. How can I sponsor WoA?

It's imperative that you take action on this opportunity now. And it is an opportunity! This is a moment at which your corporation can choose to support the organizations that work hard to spread awareness of the varied and extensive needs of this world. Not just one organization, but many will benefit. War on Apathy is a movement that will multiply its strength through awareness and branding. Much like consumerism, community involvement can and will be concepts that affect the mass-market mind. WoA will exponentially reach beyond CURVE's core market. Participating nonprofit organizations will leverage usage of the WoA text and photo bank for advertising across other markets. War on Apathy will dissolve market lines.

We welcome monetary donations, product donations, and the hospitality and travel industry's participation in the War on Apathy.

For a full sponsorship proposal, please e-mail danie@curvemag.com.

I represent a media organization. How can I become a WoA media partner?

Please email danie@curvemag.com for details.

WoA Testimonials:

"Congratulations to CURVE for declaring a War on Apathy. The National Breast Cancer Coalition would be delighted to work with you. The world of breast cancer is in need of a revolution, and your War on Apathy could be a key factor in moving beyond breast cancer awareness to taking action to prevent, treat, cure and ultimately eradicate this disease. Real and rapid progress in the fight against breast cancer must become a national priority. CURVE's War on Apathy will help get us there." - Sandra A. Adams, Senior Vice President of National Breast Cancer Coalition

"The International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance would be honored and pleased to be included in CURVE's War on Apathy campaign. We believe this campaign is timely and necessary in an age when the needs of interest groups are not met by mass markets." - Ashleigh Prince, Executive Director of International Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance

"We are thrilled to be part of CURVE's War on Apathy campaign. For many years CURVE has supported PETA's efforts to help and end animal abuse and suffering. CURVE's dedicated readers have responded in kind. We know that our participation will offer us an even greater opportunity to reach compassionate and caring individuals. Thank you, CURVE, for all you do to help make the world a better place for animals and people." - Teri Arnold, PSA Manager for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

"The Human Rights Campaign is honored to be a part of CURVE magazine's War on Apathy campaign. As the nation's largest advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality, we welcome opportunities to engage with coalition and media partners to raise awareness. CURVE's War on Apathy does just that. Today, LGBT Americans lack equality. There is no federal law prohibiting anti-gay or anti-transgender workplace discrimination. More than 1,100 rights and protections are denied to same-sex couples when we are denied the right to marry. HIV-prevention tools continue to be vastly underfunded by the federal government. And our opponents in Congress are trying to pass an amendment to the nation's Constitution that would single out same-sex couples for discrimination. Now it's more important than ever to get people engaged in the fight for equality. This goes beyond the individual volunteer. It means getting friends, family and co-workers to say they'll support you and to make good on that support by being vocal, visible and vote-conscious. CURVE's War on Apathy brings together people who believe and act for fairness. To put it plainly, CURVE's War on Apathy is part of the solution." - Jay Smith Brown, Director of Communications for Human Rights Campaign

In early October I wrote one of my latest songs, “Wall Street Bail Out Blues.” Within four days of writing it, a video crew captured me playing it on the street at Seattle’s Pike Place Market and posted the video on YouTube. That video has now reached the attention of a writer for The Wall Street Journal who is writing an article about those who have written songs about our tough economic times. His article will be published this week and I’m excited to read it.

Who knows where this might lead? Call me an optimist, but I have a feeling that this could mean that a few more seconds of that elusive fifteen minutes of fame might be coming my way.

It ain’t the cover of the Rolling Stone but it’s not every day that a writer from a major worldwide news outlet seeks me out to talk to me about my songwriting. That’s a huge validation of my efforts at staying true to my vision. I must be doing something right.

Follow your dreams.

Washington Transcripts (What is really being said in DC)

The difference between old John McCain and me is he was always a protected class fighter pilot. He crashed three planes in ways that would of got any other Navy pilot court-martialed and thrown out of the service three times over, any pilot who didn’t have a father who was an active duty four-star admiral that is. John’s military records, the ones my Administration has locked down real good, tell a tale about a spoiled service brat who never really learned the fine art of being a career officer. Like John. I was also Vietnam era, but I had to learn because I did not have high up family in the military to bail me out. McCain, because the Navy brass always excused his many peccadilloes, will never be the political street fighter I am. That is what is wrong with his Presidential campaign.

From the blog all about Washington political hacks betraying democracy!
