Television

Local television and print news outlets were aware that James Taylor Moseley was chained to the second floor of The Tomato for days - but they didn't report it until after the fire. Those same outlets were subsequently aware of the attempted firebombing of Texas Filmmakers headquarters (where raw footage for The Burning of Fry Street was stored), during Thin Line Film Festival (at which The Burning of Fry Street had its world premiere) - but they didn't report it, and haven't to this day.

As if the Boston Tea Party never happened...

Mr. Munchies. And you.

About me:
Chris Largen is an internationally published journalist, author, speaker, child advocate, and award-winning filmmaker whose work has appeared in Village Voice, Washington Post, and hundreds of other media outlets.

BOHEMIA RISING: THE STORY OF FRY STREET

ORDER NOW!!!
As big business alters America's landscape, an arts community revolts in Denton, Texas. When the streets erupt in arson and firebombs, a stunned city must redefine and reclaim itself.

WATCH THE TRAILER!

BOHEMIA RISING: THE FRY STREET STORY is a DVD compilation of short documentaries exploring rebellion and resilience in response to demolition of art, culture and history.

ORDER NOW!!!

THE FILMS:

THE BURNING OF FRY STREET - Winner of the Jury Prize at Thin Line Film Festival

Property developers and outraged citizens clash over the fate of an 80 year-old historic building on Fry Street, a cherished meeting place for artists, philosophers, students and street dwellers. Wrecking crews gear up to demolish, protesters seize the building, and a man chains himself to the top floor for three days - while an arson plot develops.

When flames engulf the structure, one activist stands accused of torching the art and history he fought to save. Evidence becomes art in this gritty, impressionistic, nightmarish documentary exploring history, politics and identity.

Directed by Christopher Largen, who went down to Fry Street three days before the fire, hoping to capture demolition footage. Discovering the building was seized by activists, he stayed with his personal camcorder, no audio or lighting equipment, no production team, no tripods or dollies, and an official budget of $0. Hours after the arson, Largen's camera was acquired by law enforcement officials, who reviewed the raw footage (Largen later provided the same evidence to the defense attorney of the accused arsonist).

ORDER NOW!!!

A DRIVING PEACE - Fry Street business owner Mike Sutton gets fed up with the war in Iraq, and covers his car with the names of fallen U.S. soldiers. The car attracts international press coverage, but when Mike runs out of room for additional names, he enlists the aid of highschool students and a national cemetery.

ASBESTOS IGNITES: A BURNING QUESTION - As a dazed community regroups after the arson blaze, a citizen returns to the crime scene to raise concerns about Denton residents who may have inhaled carcinogenic particles.

A WALK THROUGH FRY STREET - Save Fry Street representative Jon Black takes viewers on a historic journey through the Bohemian community.

THE DENTON POLKA - A live Brave Combo music video taped at Dan's Silverleaf, the night after the band received their 7th Grammy nomination. Brave Combo delivers a barn-burner gig that affirms the spirit of a community in flux.

BONUS FOOTAGE includes: a statement from United Equities, A Day and Night in the Life of The Tomato (time-lapse art film by Patrick Flaherty), an interview with Denton mayor Mark Burroughs, movie trailers from Denton filmmakers, and bonus arson footage with exploding transformers, a burning American peace flag, and a flaming car. Director's commentary provided.

A portion of BOHEMIA RISING: THE STORY OF FRY STREET sales proceeds will be donated to CAMP I-THONKA-CHI, a project of Parkland Hospital, dedicated to children with burn injuries.

Sales will also support TEXAS FILMMAKERS, a nonprofit agency dedicated to providing the regional film community with access to education, experience, equipment, exhibition, and other essential production resources.

BOHEMIA RISING: THE STORY OF FRY STREET is available for international online purchase, through this site and others.

REVIEWS OF LARGEN'S NOVEL JUNK

"JUNK is a profound and absurd tragicomedy, an engaging page-turner that reads like a film. JUNK will entertain, intrigue and provoke, inspiring debate and exploration as humanity wrestles to define the relationship between health and public policy." - Joe Camp, writer, producer, and director of the Benji films.

"JUNK is a must-read. I couldn't put it down! I was hooked from the first page." - Erin Hildebrandt

"JUNK is an engrossing page-turner which had me hooked from beginning to end. It's satire which packs a ferocious punch." - Ph.D., editor of The ARID Site

"JUNK is tragicomedy for thinking people. Largen takes no prisoners. A frighteningly believable plot, set in a not too distant future." - Dr. James Quinn, Professor of Addictions and Criminology, University of North Texas

"Brilliant! JUNK is satire at its best!" - Michael Constantine McConnell, author of Detroit Stories

"JUNK is a classic comedy in the style of Mark Twain or Will Rogers." - Jack A. Cole

"I loved this book so much that I will read it again! JUNK is a hilarious, horrifying, thought-provoking ride. So simple, yet so eloquent!" - George McMahon

"A brilliant mockumentary with frighteningly Orwellian dynamics. Packed with insight, irony, and no small dose of hilarity, JUNK seethes like a District Attorney who just lost a case on a technicality." - Renee Vaughn Hayes, editor of Venues Magazine

"Portraying the worst and best in my profession, JUNK demonstrates real possibilities for America. It is a wake up call to lovers of liberty." - Officer Howard J. Wooldridge (retired)

"JUNK is laugh out loud funny!" - Suzanne Wills

"I laughed and I cried! JUNK is beautiful! Mr. Largen possesses a talent to touch people in a way they can't forget." - Rhonda Cheatham

"JUNK is priceless... a wonderful character driven satire, simple and straightforward, a searing indictment." - Al Byrne

"JUNK is a hoot! After reading this book, sweets will taste a little sweeter." - Dean Becker, talk radio host, Cultural Baggage

"JUNK is Vonnegut styled, ironical witty satire that laughs out loud at misguided causes. I cared about the characters. There's not enough of this kind of clean, neat prose anymore. The message rang loud and clear but never screamed at me. Carry on, Mr. Largen!" - Leslie Miller, Books to Enjoy

"JUNK is hilarious and tragic! I ate 2 bags of extra butter flavored popcorn by page 100! The editing is fantastic!" - Mike Smithson

"JUNK leads you down a familiar path and then BOOM...natural thought patterns are jolted into the unfamiliar... JUNK is a mind-boggling realization, a very imaginative approach toward a very real issue." - Dr. Juliet Getty, Professor of Nutrition, University of North Texas

"What I have just read is a hit. I loved every second. I started reading it and didn't stop until I was done. When I took a break and went into the kitchen for a snack, a chill went down my spine. I could never live in a world like Junk; just the thought of it was quite terrifying. The book is great, and the thought of this marvel on film.... Oooo, I can't wait! Bottom line...the characters were original, the story was entertaining, frightening, realistic and at times quite heart-wrenching. It blended together so well. Junk is a bloody hit, man! Well, I don't know about you, but I'm going to have myself a Charlotte Russe." - Graham Armstrong, college freshman

"Darkly hilarious...Wild and funny...Entertaining, riveting reading, wherever one falls on the opinion continuum." - Natalie Davis, BlogCritics

"Like the film Traffic on sugar and triglycerides..." - Thomas Bell, Creative Loafing

"An inventive parody..." - The Arkansas Traveler

"Effective satire...Largen is a welcome voice of both playful and serious resistance." - Kim Lumpkin, Toxic Universe

"Entertaining...a fun, light read...hilarious...high in flavour..." - Leah Anderson, The Gateway Canada

"Astute...Wonderfully written and fast-paced...Provides insight...Hide your Snickers." - Zac Austrew, NT Daily
