WARREN GASKELL: A Pair of Horses
Classic alt.country confessional songwriting with a downbeat ambient, acoustic sentiment.
The new album is finally finished. It seems to have taken forever to complete. I'm never 100% happy with anything, for me it's all about compromise. I like to record as live as possible and it's not unusual for me to record vocal, guitar, drums, plus other instruments all in one go. What that means is you can't go back and change things, it also means you have to go from start to finish in one go and it also means that if you fluff a line, or play a wrong note you have to make a call on whether to re-do the entire song or accept that the fluff is part of the overall performance. So compromise comes into it. The good thing about recording that way is you get a 'performance'. You go to a place together and invariably the end result is more rewarding. Well, it is for me anyway. I guess some people would hate to record that way.
For me it's all about performance and the song, creating a moment and making it live forever, like taking a picture. More than anything though it's about the writing I guess. Writing is my lifeblood and without it I would be a mess. I believe some people have a need to write, they can't inhibit the need to get it out. I write for no reason other than my consciousness compels me to do it. If I have spells on 'non writing' time I get irritable. Strange. Anyway enough of all that deep shit. Hope you like the new stuff. Some will and others won't I guess. Either way drop me a line, i'd love to hear from you.
Many thanks for playing Fuel last night - what a great atmosphere! Looking forward to your 3rd album (!) and I'll send you a copy of our CD in the post. all the best, Andy
It’s a bit of an exclusive, featuring Adam Levy from The Handsome Band who backed Norah Jones on many of her recordings. He also wrote the classic track "In the morning" from her "Feels like home" album.
Support will be from Warren Gaskell - his last album got an 8 out of 10 review from Americana-UK, and his new one will be out any time now - and of course from Picnic Area.
A bit about Adam Levy: Adam Levy is best known for his tenure as the featured guitarist in Norah Jones’ Handsome Band. He played on her breakout 2002 disk Come Away with Me, her ’04 follow-up Feels Like Home, and her latest CD Not Too Late. In his downtime between steady gigs with Jones, Levy has been onstage and/or in the studio with Rosanne Cash, Amos Lee, M. Ward, and up-and-coming Aussie artist Eran James. In addition to Levy’s skills as a player, he is a gifted songwriter. He penned "In the Morning" for Jones’ Feels Like Home, and other artists have recorded his songs as well. There’s no doubt, though, that the best way to hear Levy’s folk/pop/blues gems is straight from the source.
Adam’s latest album "Washing day" has received rave reviews from the likes of Offbeat and All Music, so don’t miss out on the chance to hear the songs live, in an intimate venue, for free!
Everybody here at The Winelight Club wishes you a most spectacular festive season. It was a pleasure working with you in 2007 and we wish you even better times in 2008.

The Picnic Club - Americana Special!
Acoustic showcase upstairs at Fuel Bar, Wilmslow Road, Withington, Manchester
Monday Sep 17th, 7.30pm, admission free - music starts early!
This has turned out, more by accident than anything else, to be an Americana special featuring some of Manchesters leading alt country talents. Amazingly weve got the mighty Bonebox to headline - Britains equivalent of Lambchop, Jay Taylor & co are responsible for one of the best albums of the last few years in "Death of a prize fighter". www.myspace.com/jaytaylor.
The Blazing Snowmen have an incredible musical lineage that includes membership of bands like Marc (Lard) Rileys Creepers. They correctly describe their songs as lyrical bitcoms; and include some less than respectful homages to certain well-known Manchester musicians. www.myspace.com/theblazingsnowmen
Warren Gaskell writes heartfelt melodic songs that have drawn rave notices from the Americana UK website (8 out of 10 for his last album A pair of horses). www.myspace.com/warrengaskell
Garron Frith has been attracting press interest for the last couple of years for his Gram Parsons influenced material and his debut album will soon be in the shops - buy it early at this gig! www.myspace.com/garronfrith
Picnic Area, your hosts and local alt country renegades are close to completing their debut CD. www.myspace.com/picnicarea
Getting away from country a bit, Between Three play haunting acoustic material reminiscent of Nick Drake. www.myspace.com/betweenthree
This will be an incredible night, get there early so you dont miss anything!
Hi Warren, had a little look at your page today. Hope to make the gig on Friday... It'll depend on how my cousin feels after her long haul flight over. Can't wait to see you on Sunday. x
With respect to your comment Warren, it's care in the community, we like to do our bit. I believe the gigs having been going well, hope to pop along soon
Warren I was in your motherland...well not quite Manchester, but I think I passed through :) I was hoping to catch one of your shows, but don't think I will be able to :( Hope all is well!!
G'day Warren. Just wanted to tell you that after listening to dozens of singer songwriters such as yourself, I've actually bought my very first cd on line....YOURS. Thanks for making the effort to share your music. Trev.
Just read you're philosophy again regarding reaching out to people! You're so right! I agree entirely. we have a lot in common my friend! can't wait to have you back at Green Bohemia again mate.
and hurry up and finish that album cos I wanna hear some more of your fantsatic songs!!!
Thanks for the kind words Warren. Have to check you out next, unfortunately me & mick are on holiday with the ladies on the 09/06/07, but will catch you shortly. By the way, the killers say Hi!
Good to hear your coming on Friday. I suppose it was a choice of watching us or the eurovision repeats, which strangely enough is what we will sound like (not scooch though!)
Please make sure you drink plenty of beer and invite lots of ladies, that's care workers for Mick, Mark & Ste.
Little Neemo will be singing sweetly about bitterness and vice versa, tomorrow Thursday the 17th May, at Blackdog, the Ladybarn, Ladybarn Lane, Fallowfield. It's 3 quid in. We're on quite late, but get down early and you'll also get to see Denis Jones, Dan Melrose, Robert John, and DJ Dunk le Chunk (Red Deer Club). It's a no-brainer.
The past is a gated community, they don't want your sort round there.
Thanks very much for adding us, Warren. I really enjoy your melodies and clever lyrics but particularly, your approach.Current favorites are "Close to you" and "Anything's better than.." Here's to being real.
I'll be putting different bunch of four on our site today if you'd like to listen.Regards, Trev.
Just popped on to have a quick listen to your quality tunes. I'm here with Mick and keeps going on about his amazing harmonica sound, you'll have to keep an eye on this one, he's getting to big for his own boots
Hi Warren, just popping by to have another listen to your cracking tunes. especially hurricaine, which sounds great on myspace, but I must admit, had great presence and feeling when you sang it live at the prince of wales pub. pass on my regards to your mates who came along, they were awesome. got lots of great memories of that night. Take care, Stokesy
Little Neemo will be singing pretty songs about ugly things at Green Bohemia, the Green Room this saturday. There's no charge, and there's plenty of other acts from 8.00 or so - we're on at 9.30. Free sympathy with every drink purchased.
