WARREN GASKELL: A Pair of Horses
Classic alt.country confessional songwriting with a downbeat ambient, acoustic sentiment.
The new album is finally finished. It seems to have taken forever to complete. I'm never 100% happy with anything, for me it's all about compromise. I like to record as live as possible and it's not unusual for me to record vocal, guitar, drums, plus other instruments all in one go. What that means is you can't go back and change things, it also means you have to go from start to finish in one go and it also means that if you fluff a line, or play a wrong note you have to make a call on whether to re-do the entire song or accept that the fluff is part of the overall performance. So compromise comes into it. The good thing about recording that way is you get a 'performance'. You go to a place together and invariably the end result is more rewarding. Well, it is for me anyway. I guess some people would hate to record that way.
For me it's all about performance and the song, creating a moment and making it live forever, like taking a picture. More than anything though it's about the writing I guess. Writing is my lifeblood and without it I would be a mess. I believe some people have a need to write, they can't inhibit the need to get it out. I write for no reason other than my consciousness compels me to do it. If I have spells on 'non writing' time I get irritable. Strange. Anyway enough of all that deep shit. Hope you like the new stuff. Some will and others won't I guess. Either way drop me a line, i'd love to hear from you.
Recent reviews: "Gaskell is an exponent of inner city folk and the urban love song. There's something distinctly Mancunian about his mix of the blues and tender but subliminally rugged work". (Manchester Music)
This month we mostly have Catie Curtis (with a Richard Thompson cover), Lindsay Fuller and The Cheap Dates (and who amongst us isn't?), Josh Fix with a track from the well-titled album This Town Is Starting To Make Me Angry and the rather lovely Red Rooster.
Four more little sonic gems for your August pleasure are now available on the site. Blitzen Trapper, Boulder Acoustic Society, Jay Brannan and The Wiyos. Yet another fine quartet even though we say so ourselves as picked them out.
Hello, after an unfortunate hiatus, the reasons for which are probably best not gone into here, we finally have some new music on the AUK MySpace site. For your listening pleasure this month we offer Nathan Oliver, Conrad Ford, the irrepressible Todd Snider and the delightful Beccy Owen. Don't forget too, for those of you within striking distance of Leicester, Electric Dustbowl 2 on 19 September.
Hello, it's that time of the month again when we add more lovely music to our site. This month's happy foursome are The Barker Band in wistful mode, the summer of love-ish Old Californio, the anything but summer love-ish Christopher Rees and, wait for it..."Travelling Salesman's Young Wife Home Alone On Christmas In Montpelier, VT" from Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, which evenr if it was rubbish (and it's not) just had to be included for the names alone.
Hey Warren- We managed to get your MP3 and photo sorted so it is all up on our page now. See you May 9th. Bring your fans and friends. Look forward to it. TB
Hi Warren, Thanks for your contribution to an outstanding evening at Fuel on Friday. Enjoying the preview copy of the 3rd album, think it might be your best yet, Andy of PA
Warren Gaskell fans - don't forget you can hear him playing his new stuff (and old stuff?) live at Fuel Bar in Withington this Fri 27th Feb, along with Quiet Loner, Garron Frith and Picnic Area. 8.30pm onwards - get there early so you don't miss Warren!
Hello, we're back again with great new tracks on our page. This month we have some rural bleakness from The Roe Family Singers, the dark intensity of Eamon Dowd, a new song from roots legend Neal Casal and frenetic but compelling from Novillero on the delightfulyl titled but not-at-all-smelly Paco Rabanne. Hope you like them all.
Hiya Warren, thanks for your comments about the cds, we're really glad you like them. You yourself are one of those rare people who manages to sound as good on record as you do live. Nice one! Very nice to meet you (and Mrs G too!). Maybe gig together sometime. Rosie and Matt xx
I knew it. Just as I suspected .... if I came back after a month or two and had another listen to your new stuff, I'd like 'em even more. And so it is. Nice work, mate. How are you keepin'? Trev.
Ow, that sounds like it would hurt (the elbow, not Down The River). What a nightmare, just lyric writing for a few months then? Get well soon chief, keep your chin up Dom
great to see you've got some of the new tracks up! sounding great, (but then I already knew that from my sneak preview!). lets arrange a launch gig for when all the artwork etc is finished?
Many thanks for playing Fuel last night - what a great atmosphere! Looking forward to your 3rd album (!) and I'll send you a copy of our CD in the post. all the best, Andy
It’s a bit of an exclusive, featuring Adam Levy from The Handsome Band who backed Norah Jones on many of her recordings. He also wrote the classic track "In the morning" from her "Feels like home" album.
Support will be from Warren Gaskell - his last album got an 8 out of 10 review from Americana-UK, and his new one will be out any time now - and of course from Picnic Area.
A bit about Adam Levy: Adam Levy is best known for his tenure as the featured guitarist in Norah Jones’ Handsome Band. He played on her breakout 2002 disk Come Away with Me, her ’04 follow-up Feels Like Home, and her latest CD Not Too Late. In his downtime between steady gigs with Jones, Levy has been onstage and/or in the studio with Rosanne Cash, Amos Lee, M. Ward, and up-and-coming Aussie artist Eran James. In addition to Levy’s skills as a player, he is a gifted songwriter. He penned "In the Morning" for Jones’ Feels Like Home, and other artists have recorded his songs as well. There’s no doubt, though, that the best way to hear Levy’s folk/pop/blues gems is straight from the source.
Adam’s latest album "Washing day" has received rave reviews from the likes of Offbeat and All Music, so don’t miss out on the chance to hear the songs live, in an intimate venue, for free!
