Jim began playing touch-style in 1978. His credits include performances in Colorado during the '80s with many different progressive rock and jazz groups, playing such venues as the Rainbow Theater, Boulder Theater, Bombay Club, The Mercury Cafe, The Colorado Governors Mansion, and many, many others.
After moving to LA in 1989, Jim played such venues as The Lighthouse, The Baked Potato, The Strand, At My Place, Cafe 322, Vitellos, and countless other venues with rock, blues, reggae, jazz, fusion and progressive rock bands as a sideman, and band leader.
From 2000 to 2008 Jim worked as customer service, inspection, intonation and set up technician for Warr Guitars, the company that makes the top-of-the-line instruments that Jim has played since 1995.
In 1998, Jim began playing the Uncrossed 4ths Tuning System for touch-guitars, and was one of the major innovators of this tuning, which is now the most common tuning sold on Warr instruments. The tuning resembles 6-string bass, and is much easier to learn and play than the system that had been common on such instruments previously.
Jim also teaches touch guitar. His credits include B-tap 2007, E-tap in 2006 and 2004, and the New Music Festival in La Crosse, Wis. November of 2002. In 2010 Jim plans to teach at the Seattle Touchstyle Seminar in April, and E-tap in Belgium in July.
Jim now plays solo and with the groups The Fuzzy Logic Boptet, and Crepuscule with Fido.
There are two solo CDs available (Jazz Heretics, How Did I Get Here?), and one with the group Fuzzy Logic Boptet (Playing Favorites which Glenn Drakeley named the best Tapped-guitar CD of the year in 2007, and has had airplay on KJZZ).
