A long time ago in the kingdom of Japan, lived a samurai. This samurai carried the scars of many wars and strife, and was a great and the most beloved of all his Daimyo's warriors. But something was missing from his life and he now found himself downhearted, longing for something more to his life than killing and loyalty to his lord.
To soothe his restless soul he sought to learn the ways of heaven and hell, and travelled far into another kuni, to seek the wisdom of a foresighted Sō.
When the samurai arrived at the dwelling of the wise man, he found the Sō sitting on a tatami reading the sutras. As the towering Samurai approached, the Sō looked up, showing no sign of surprise.
"You!" the samurai commanded, "will show me the ways of heaven and hell!"
"Ah," replied the monk calmly, "you call yourself a samurai? Why, you are as a frail as a the leaves in Autumn. You might as well have a twig instead of a sword. Now, go away, I can teach you nothing!" With the last word uttered by the monk, the samurai raised his sword and prepared to strike.
"That is the pathway to hell," replied the old Sō.
The samurai was impressed by the bravery of the old monk and sheaved his sword. The monk had raised the ire of the samurai, risking his own life, to teach the hot-headed warrior a lesson. The samurai gave a low-bow to the Sō in thanks for the lesson he was taught.
"My friend," the monk started, "that is the pathway to heaven".
