Funky improv grooves... Water Babies play spontaneously created funk
improvisations lovingly designed to have you shakin' your booty. Think
Bitches Brew or Headhunters combined with Galatic or The Meters
and you'll get an idea...
Water Babies is all about the energy and spontaneity of improvised music.
We came together as an experiment to see if we could strip away everything we knew
about form and chord changes and just ride The Groove. What we have found has exceeded
our wildest expectations. All of our songs are one-take improvisations rooted in The
Groove which we hope will have you shakin' your thang!
Every one of our shows is full of surprises and unexpected twists and turns. Magical interaction and tight coherence ensues as we develop new musical ideas in every moment. We draw inspiration from each other, from the audience, from the atmosphere of the room, and from our musical forefathers, groups like Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew band, Maceo Parker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood.
Above all, we never lose our main focus:
To deliver the most distinguished and funky improv grooves we can muster and share the joy that comes from creating magic in each moment.
Hey Friends, it's me, Flowmotion & the Summer Meltdown Festival.
Just wanted to remind everyone, the festival is coming up in about three weeks or so and tickets are about to go up in price on July 23rd. Now is the time to get your tickets. 30+ bands on three stages, camping on 40 acres next to the river and epic views of glacier capped Whitehorse Mountain from the stage. It's about 75 minutes north of Seattle in Darrington WA. This is going to be one of the best years yet, so please tell all your friends and spread the word about the tickets going up next week. Visit the official site by clicking on the graphic below to get all the details.
Pocket Change brings you another large ensemble show on Thursday, May 22nd at Tula’s in the heart of Belltown! This show will feature some good friends and jazz monsters to recapture the thick sound and incredible energy from our sold out CD Release Show at The Triple Door last December. We’ll be performing our full set from that night, as well as a new set of material arranged for our extended line-up. Special guests include Ivan Arteaga on bari sax, Aaron Jenkins on tenor sax, Sarah Nelson on trumpet, and Seattle veteran Jay Thomas on alto sax!
Cover is only $8 and the 8pm show is ALL AGES for the first two sets. As with our last two shows at The Triple Door, we expect this show to sell out, so make your reservations today! Call Tula’s at (206) 443-4221, or visit them at 2214 2nd Ave in Seattle.
This Friday, March 21st at LoFi, J&J Music Presents a night of groove with yours truly and groove monsters the Water Babies!
This show will be a different from anything we’ve done in the past. Expect couches, rugs, pillows, and a slick loft feel when you enter, giving you the option of laying back and enjoying the sounds, or getting up and grooving along with us. There’s no stage so you can get as close as you want to the action! This is our first full band show since our sold out CD Release at The Triple Door, so we expect a full house and the release of lots of pent-up energy...
Cover is $7 and it’s 21+. The Water Babies will be getting started at 10pm, with P-Change up at midnight. See you there!

We'll have a few special guests on stage with us including legendary producer/engineer/guitarist Bob Power (Citizen Cope, Erykah Badu, Me’shell N’degeOcello et al.). It should be a fun time.
"Pocket Change is a hot young septet raised on funk and fusion, assiduously dedicated to bringing the core strands of primal jazz through these forms...Man, these guys are exciting!" - Tom Peterson, Victory Review
Spread the word! This show benefits local non-profit Eco Encore. Check it out...
Thanks for the comment, and good luck for the all-funk throw-down at the Tractor tonight! Funk it up in good ole Babies style, OK? Wish I could be there -- I often very fondly recall our two Tractor gigs, especially the one that ended up on the album. Speaking of which, "Draw Me a Bath" has received raves and applauses around Melbourne -- folks here love the tracks. So, maybe we should really start thinking about doing that tour? I mean, the heaviest gear is already over here!
So excited to hear that there will be recordings tonight -- let me know when they're up!
Groove it up tonight!! Hope Aaron will be back on the deep-toned strings soon again!
Thanks for the comment. Can't speak for the others but I am moving this weekend so I won't be able to make it. Have a great show! We should talk about doing a weekend festival at The Tractor or somewhere for the fall....sort of a Non-Jazz-Jazz Fest.
