Did you know that every 15 seconds a child dies from a water related illness? In Africa, the average distance that is walked to a water source is 5 miles. Often, the responsibility to retrieve water falls on the girls, keeping them from attending school. Their water source is often where cattle and other animals drink, clothes are washed and people bath. Fuel wood can cost 30 cents, for people who typically live on less than $1 per day, so boiling water before use is a strain on the finances. This is a continent where half the population lives in extreme poverty (less than a dollar per day).
It's our responsibility as a rich nation to do something about this terrible crisis. As we and other nations create the emissions causing rapid climate change, Africa, the lowest emitting continent, suffers the most. Lakes are drying up, soil is depleted and water becomes even scarcer. It's time to act.
PlayPumps International has come up with an ingenious way to help villages without power and fuel resources to get access to clean water. Please check out their amazing work at Playpumps.org, then join us in raising the funds for at least four water pumps. Together, we will bring water to almost 12,000 people!
