About me: Water~Stone Review is a literary annual published by the Graduate School of Liberal Studies at Hamline University. The review promises the excitement of trend-setting work and the artistic excellence of a proud Midwestern literary tradition. It is geared to the curious reader who prefers a range of styles and voices, intelligent and lively discourse, and strong, original writing. Water~Stone Review publishes work in all genres (from both emerging and well-known writers), essay/reviews, and writers’ interviews. Work from the review has won two Pushcart Prizes and been included in Best American Poetry. It also has won a bronze award for design excellence from the Minnesota Magazine Publishers Association.
Features include two biennial contests: the Jane Kenyon Poetry Prize and the Brenda Ueland Prose Prize. The review also publishes an annual Meridel Le Sueur Essay by such writers as Patricia Hampl, Terry Tempest Williams, Eavan Boland, John Edgar Wideman, and Scott Russell Sanders. Each issue includes
two or three interviews with well-known authors (e.g., Junot Diaz, Julia Alvarez, Frederick Busch, Brenda Hillman, Maxine Hong Kingston, Rosellen Brown, Rita Dove, and Li-Young Lee).
The review is designed by DesignWorks, the graphic design studio at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The designer for each issue curates a selection of photographs, one of which is used for the cover. The vision for Water~Stone Review is to create a beautifully designed magazine of the highest literary quality.
