"To have the opportunity to be at Wath Festival is a gift. Intimacy makes it special; I want to sing its praises far and wide. The fact that the festival has been taking place for the last thirty-five years, growing in recognition each passing year, while maintaining its strong local feel is something that should be celebrated regardless of the attention of the masses. It's authentic, special and something that shouldn't be lost. Long live Wath festival, South Yorkshire's best kept secret."- Ruth Palmer, 2007
Wath Festival was established in 1974 and by the people of the community for the community. Thirty six years later the event has gained local and national recognition for being one of the friendliest festivals in the region.
The Wath Festival committee are already making plans for the 2010 event taking place on 28th April to 3rd May next year.
2009 saw Wath Festival branch out into three venues for concerts and workshops at the Montgomery Hall and marquee, Sandygate House Hotel and Wath Rugby Club. There was a whole host of performers who took to the stage this year including the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, The Demon Barbers, Karine Polwart and Chris & Kellie While.
As well as the big names Wath Festival has a reputation for supporting local performers and the up and coming names like Ray Hearne, Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts, Charlie Barker, Jon Gomm, Roger Davies, WW.Combo and Holly Taymar.
Local school children, morris teams and musicians provided colorful street parades in the town centre and 2009 saw the new ‘Wath’s Got Talent’ competition… and we can tell you it certainly has! The young people of Wath got to showcase their abilities in a skill of their choice.
Without the support from the local and national community Wath Festival could not have continued to grow in size and reputation. Here’s hoping that the 2010 event will follow the success of previous years.
It's an honour to be your friend... it appears that your festival will be rocking (but gently)! I hope that the committee have considered my two sons Scott and Danny for inclusion on the bill - like myself they do a cracking cover-version - but they do it a little more tongue-in-cheek - Wath Festival probably needs a duo that do Judas Priest and Vera Lynn on banjos, ukes and guitars...
