About me:

Join us for our groundbreaking 2007/08 season dedicated entirely to new play development. Featuring works presented as part of The Langston Hughes Project, EdgeFest’s 2008 LA History Project and Black Words on White Pages. Each project will undergo an intensive development process and culminate in public workshop readings presented across Los Angeles.

2007/08 Artistic Programming

We are proud to announce that WVTC has been invited to participate with five Los Angeles-based ensemble theater companies in EdgeFest’s 2008 LA History Project festival. The project will address the history of the unionization of the teaching profession and its significance to public education.

The Langston Hughes Project
Written by Lynn Manning
Directed by Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez
May 2008

Due to the ongoing report of violence between African-Americans and Latinos, WVTC has set out to highlight and build upon positive historic examples of collaborations between these two communities. This project will explore a year Langston Hughes lived and worked in Mexico with his father between 1920-1921. The time Langston Hughes spent immersed in Mexican culture influenced his writing and played a part in his contributions to the Harlem Renaissance. There will be a full staged production of the work scheduled for spring 2009.

RICHARD AZURDIA CO-STARS IN THE LIONSGATE HEIST FILM "LADRON QUE ROBA A LADRON"
The film will be released nationwide by Lionsgate in theaters this weekend on August 31, 2007.

"Ladron Que Roba A Ladron" is a heist/caper movie in the tradition of "Ocean's Eleven," but pulled off by a group of immigrant workers who team up to rob an evil, wealthy entrepreneur. The result is a motley crew of underdogs, undertaking an impossible task, at impossible odds.

The film boasts one of the biggest casts ever for a Spanish-language movie and toplines some of the biggest Latino stars around. The cast includes Saul Lisazo, Miguel Varoni, Gabriel Soto, Fernando Culonga, Oscar Torre (CBS's Cane), Julie Gonzalo (Christmas With The Kranks, DodgeBall), Ruben Garfias, Jojo Henrickson, Sonya Smith and Ivonne Montero. Richard Azurdia plays the role of the menacing but pathetic “Primitivo”, private accountant to Moctezuma Valdez (Saul Lizaso). The Jim McNamara/Ben O'Dell project was written by Jojo Henrickson and directed by Joe Menendez. The film will be released nationwide by Lionsgate in theaters August 31, 2007 with English sub-titles.

CORN PLAY (OMNIVORE),
Written and Directed by Matthew McCray

FEATURING: Richard Azurdia, Hillary Bauman, Donald Boughton, Rachel Bryant, West Liang, Kirsten Long, Matthew McCray, Kristin Norris, Welton Thomas Pitchford, Christopher Spencer

Corn Play, a work-in-progress by Matthew McCray. Inspired by the best-selling non-fiction, The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, Corn Play explores the evolution of agriculture and agribusiness in America, placing mythical, historical and fictional characters side-by-side as they navigate through the ages. Stories intertwine and realities converge inside the mysterious labyrinth of Zea Mays (corn). Is what we consume really the food we intend to eat or has industry finally conquered the American dinner table?
