Watu Wangu is a network of young talented aspiring Kenyan recording artists, producers and DJs based, operating and/or currently residing in the UK. It was formed mid-2004 in an effort to collat individual strengths, experience and resources and thus create a secondary promotion and exposure platform on which members can effectively utilise to further enhance their individual efforts.
The collective employs an open membership and considers all those who fall within the above fundamentals as a part of its movement. Its name has already been slowly spreading amongst the Kenyan community in the UK and on the entertainment circuit in Kenya. Much of this has been through shows in the UK (Miss Kenya UK, Jamhuri Day 2004 and 2005, Nameless concert, etc) and through their mixed compilation, Funguwa Mlango and current volume Twende Kazi.
Funguwa Mlango was a announcing testament of intent. Until its release much of its content had been unheard but by combining collective efforts and resources the compilation mixtape reached, and was acclaimed, far and wide. Branded The Prelude it was introduced by international recording artist Akon and freely distributed at events and through peers across the UK and circulated amongst the matatu network in Nairobi and Mombasa. It spearheaded the popularity of featured tracks including The One For Me by Lopo T & Levysill and the massive hit debut by Wawesh, Mjanja.
Their recently released official mixtape, Twende Kazi, is the much anticipated follow up. As with the prelude its mixed by DJ Edu whilst produced, edited and executed by Sir Prestige. This ambitious project features exclusive joints as well as showcases members individuals projects. This time round the songs are officially introduced by an impressive array of international names including Damian Jnr Gong Marley, Young Jeezy, T.I, Busy Signal, Bow Wow, Teddy Riley, etc., who all endorse the spirit of Watu Wangus intentions and give shouts to Kenyans worldwide.
As part of its strategical advancement the collective is now preparing its third (and possibly final) mixed compilation prior to embarking on an ambitious collaborative album project planned for early 2007. Meanwhile its also lending its support to current album releases by Wawesh (Its Meant To Be), Emmanuel Jal, and Tapelli (Kanyagio La Kwanza) plus promotional releases from Levysill, Kalaway, DJ Shyheim and DJ Dubwise. Look out for upcoming releases from K-Diplomats, Beatmaka and Lopo T.
Despite still being in its early stages Watu Wangu has continued to enjoy unprecented media exposure on 1Xtra BBC in the UK whilst in Kenya has welcomed support from presenters at Capital FM, Easy FM and YFM plus ofcourse various websites across the internet. Watu Wangu promises to fully deliver on its potential in the coming months. Keep it right here, Tuko Pamoja!
